I've never understood the fascination with looking right into the diode. I like my eyesight! Besides, looking at something bright isn't pleasurable at all. What causes this instinct? There are reports of lots of people trying it - just look at this thread. :

It is like telling a 4 year old not to touch the hot stove. The idiots just NEED to see what will happen when they look into the laser.

I tend to keep my lasers away from anyone. As soon as i mention that these can burn they generally are really cautious. All i have to do is show it to someone that it burns plastic and lights a match and they wouldnt want to look into it.

How long did you friend look into it for? Lucky it wasnt collimated for burning. Black pupil + burning lazer = VERY BAD EVEN FOR A SPLIT OF A SPLIT SECOND.

your pupils aren't actually black, it's just dark inside your eyes.

your retina is actually a reddish colour, like the color they show up in a camera flash.

Then maybe I should make a new equation to represent the situation?
