soldering with a laser?

I was wondering if there was a laser that is strong enough to solder with but not damage components ?

It would depend on the color of the laser and the color of the board you're soldering to, for one.
Two, it would be a good idea to make the pinpoint from focusing an easy distance to remember.
Three, for gods sake wear goggles, lol.

But I doubt it would be more efficient than a nice soldering iron and a steady hand IMHO.

Also, it would depend on what your soldering because some components are very heat sensitive in terms of accidentally hitting them with a focused high powered laser.

You can absolutely solder with a laser. You can also weld with lasers, as well as cut metal with lasers. I'm sure you can fnid plenty of info about that on google.

A laser that can solder or weld in a handheld pointer like the DIY lasers on this forum? No, not really. But there are lasers that can do it.

Exactly. But when I need to do some SMD work, my laser pointer is the last thing I'll be grabbing  ;D

And if it was a handheld, wouldnt it need to be like a 2w IR laser or something to melt the solder?

i saw a video of a 405nm laser melting solder. and though hey the would be cool because the solder iron i have to fine work is a butane one that needs a lighter to start it. it is a cheap iron but it works better then my 50 dollar iron.

Using a laser to actually solder something is quite impractical. while the blu-ray laser melted the solder itself, by the time you attach any kind of heatsink to it (even the component is a heatsink) it will not generate enough heat to melt it. Grab a few watts, and yeah, maybe, but the best way is just to learn how to solder properly :P

For fine SMT work, you'd want a 2W fiber coupled laser diode, with some kind of active cooling.
Hand grip can be made for the fiber; instant on, instant off; no focusing worries. -perfect for small detail soldering. The unit pictured sold for less than $160 dollars on ebay.

That is one very useful laser you have there. :o

What other thing can you do with the laser? :P
