The black one is still available.

The concept of a "duty cycle" is a bit outmoded now. It's a bit of a leftover from DPSS lasers. There are no crystals to become misaligned in a diode laser.

The only thing you are really concerned with is total heat. As these 445nm diodes heat up, their output goes down. How long it takes to heat up and/or cool back down depends greatly on the ambient temperature and the amount of metal in the heat sink.

I usually limit my hand-held lasers to about 60-90 seconds. How quickly will it cool back down? --- Is it 68 degrees or 110 degrees where you are? I keep my house at ~75 degrees. I am NOT a crazy burner,but I have never had a problem with my hand-helds. If you are limiting your burn time to a minute and pay attention to your laser, you will NOT have a problem.

The bottom line here is that one MUST pay attention to their laser now. A simple "60 on / 60 off" is no longer valid. If it gets warm, let it cool down. If it gets hot, you are overusing it ;)

What apparent temperature do you think is "time to turn it off" hot? When it's detectably above room temperature, when it's lukewarm like the back of my LCD monitor, or when it's hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch? Hard to know how much heat these can take. I've limited that SS18650 you sold me to 60 seconds, just because it's my favorite laser and I don't want to take risks with it.

In the projector the thermal protection circuit is a 100C circuit.
That doesn't mean that it should be run at 100C. ;)
It just means that these can take more heat than we are used to
The challenge comes in that the diode 's output goes down as it heats up.
I have not done a scientific study of the temperatures.
When it feels "hot" to me, I let it cool down.
What the actual temperature is when it feels "hot" to me, I haven't a clue
Maybe someone will take the time to do this study
