Solar Death Ray?

Hello everyone! I am pretty new to the LPF and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a recently ordered laser fro Blord, I was just wondering if any of you guys (or gals) have every built a solar death ray like this one? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2yHRCJKH8I&feature=youtu.be)
I have gotten a temp reading of around 2300 degrees F and it melts pretty much everything I put in front of it!
Needless to say a welding mask is completely needed this is the brightest thing I have ever seen.

Actually, it's related to the new scientific
term, "Globule Climate Crunch" or whatever.

Sure thing! I used a Rear Projection screen TV magnifying lens. Since everyone is switch to flat screens you can literally get paid to pick one up. and after you make a mount for it. (and wait for a sunny day) you can spend hours figuring out what you can and can't melt!

Another thing is that sometimes you get a TV with a lower quality lens in it, its foggier and has a massive focal point and doesn't get nearly as hot. it is also a lot of fun bragging to all of your friend you can make obsidian in your backyard!
 
Long ago, I got a 12x12" Fresnel lens from Edmonds.
It has a warning - "not a toy" .... NO $h1T !!!
I use my welding helmet when I burn ants !!!!
Really HOT. You grab a square foot of clear sun light
on a tiny spot and you will see how trivial our lasers are.

Cool No lie i just set up a rig 2 days ago for my Fresnel lens from a rear projection tv I have.
I have yet to do much tho because by the time i finished the stand i Only had 10 minutes of sunlight before it got cloudy :(. It was sunny when I made the stand.

However based on this video i think i have the Type wrong lens

I am by no way a tree hugging greenie & when I saw this guy's "alternate" solar death ray setup ~9 months ago , I made a few sketches of my own , definately not for "green" purposes... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeSyHgO5fmQ

I'm glad he seems to have no knowledge or formal education in material properties , optical multiplication , distilled water , boiling point of water in a vacuum etc....

Please don't tell him about the variety of 2.45 GHtz based parabolic antennas/dishes or any other frequencies in the microwave range that are available for the public to freely use, if he even finds out about the _basics_ of radio transmissions , & starts to properly polish & set up an array of 1/4 wave , 1/2 wave , 3/4 wave & full wave Parabolic antennas/dishes he _will_ walk create one hell of a hot spot & vaporise himself.....

When you understand the Elements , Father Darwin takes an immediate interest in you..

Fresnel lenses will melt & fail very early in the big picture , if you know how to properly engineer materials + Elements like Water & The Sun you could slice & dice any targeted "object" in your neighbourhood.

I used some letter-sized Fresnel lens I got for a buck at a thrift store and it really does burn stuff quickly, and welding goggles do help a lot. It really makes these handheld lasers seem kind of lame (well, more lame I mean) as far as burning power is concerned.
 
Look what I found on my shelf ! A Pair of fresh Hand Held Portable "solar death ray" lenses , (potentially) I'll have a look through the big versions on YouTube to see how they are framed etc etc ,





I also found a collection of old CD & DVD burners & readers that I collected over the years , there should be some useful laser diodes to gently remove from them & put to some serious use. Thermal runaway should not be a problem I have a pair of 9amp 127 junction 12 to 15VDC (from memory) Peltier cooling units assembled with dedicated power supplies for each of them that are not in active service....

This was the original reason I came back here for a look & a chat to see how to limit the voltage & current to the salvaged diodes....860nm IR preferably , would getting a genuine 300mA output from a red diode from a "bench laser" setup ? The cold side of the Aluminium peltier blocks will drop to well below zero degree's C when they are not attached to anything.


I'll open the IR Laser project in the correct forum section once I get some serious Red & IR eye protection , seems that these salvaged diodes can give out some very serious power when they are properly constructed & cooled
