So... is 589nm really worth it?

Hello LPF,

As you can see by my signature below I already own a 594 Rigel and was debating whether spending some money to get myself a 589 is really worth it. I've reviewed a couple threads on LPF and even went on a wavelength tool conversion and while some people often tell me they are quite difference in person, every other source tells me they look almost similar in color! I mean, I could see wanting it to try and collect every single wavelength but is it worth it just color wise?

Thoughts? :)

Get it while you can. It's awesome and if you have blue googles that block light up to 750 or so you can see IR florescence on wood. my 612 hene is too high to do it.

@joeyss Yeah, especially if the FDA manages to pass a ban on all laser pointers below 610nm that might be a serious problems to getting on of these. I'll give it time before buying one however as they aren't cheap. :)

banning blue ray is just dumb tho my 50mw can't make it up past ~70 feet at night when a much lower 5mw 650 can.


plus 405 is much more scattered than red and dimmer in lumens per watt.


if they decide to ban the WLs there's still a 90 day public comment window before it becomes law.

also : Laser Pointers may be defined as handheld laser products designed for battery-powered operation that are manufactured, designed, intended or promoted to provide illumination, designation of a target or point of origin, or sighting, with no associated ["technological or scientific purpose" for the laser’s emission. Laser products are not excluded as laser pointers when used for visual entertainment, vision disruption or startle or novelty purposes.


what if your scientific purpose for 589 is to study ir florescence on organic objects and analyze optics due to the clean and good divergence of a DPPS system. LEDs amber 590 peak do not provide the single spectral line that a 589 laser does.
 
One thing I have learned, where there are laws there are ways to get around them and banning something often just makes it more desirable. However, there could be lots of problems created by the law which are not warranted. Call 911 right now, Jonny saw someone using a green laser pointer outside, those are so dangerous they are illegal!
 
You know how at first it looks like some yellow traffic lights are more yellow and some are more orange, then you look closely and realize that it's really just ambient lighting conditions that makes the difference?

Well it's kinda the same with these. If you don't see them side by side, and only one or the other at a time, you'd likely never notice a difference. Side by side, the 589 almost always looks more yellow because they're almost always more powerful, which over saturates your eye. At the same power, they look basically the same.

Not worth it IMO to get a GLP-589, but a PGL-III-M/Spartan 589 at 90 or so mW would be a worthwhile investment.

Thanks for your input Chicxulub! I agree, unless you get a high enough powered unit, for just 5nm spending hundreds kinda seems crazy :p

I have wanted one, but when I see 40-50mw I haven't been excited enough to spend that kind of money on one, let alone 5mw.
