This is ridiculous! 3 hours of sleep in the last 72hrs. That's even with taking Ambian AND Xanax before bed.

Got a BAD cough and it keeps me from getting any sleep.
Somebody please come shoot me in the head with a 5 Megawatt laser.
I'm so freaking loopy right now from lack of sleep.

It took me 20min to write this short message. Geesh!:wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf:

Call a doctor.

Bah sleep is over rated. You will get plenty of sleep when your dead.

Honestly though, I find sex the best medicine to help me sleep. Just ask my wife, we screw, I roll over and fall asleep. (then snore).

You considered using cough medication instead?

Get rid of the cough so your lungs can rest. Check that the meds don't interfere with the sleeping pills or have any adverse side effects.

Try playing some soft, slow and soothing music. That sometimes helps.

ibuprofen and a milo always gets rid of my cough and i fall asleep quickly (also taken with some codral cold tablets)

oh yeah i also heard a plank of 4x2 works:p

Uggg. This is a regular thing for me really. Not the cough so much, but INSOMNIA.
I've had the cough for about a week now. Grandkid gave it to me I think.
Yea, I took some prescription cough med we have as well as the sleep/nerve meds but it's just not getting it done.
I know I will end up taking a 2-3 hr nap sometime after dawn. That's usually what happens to me.

I turn the TV off, and don't have a computer to access in the bedroom, but I will just lay there, start getting drowsy, then I start coughing which wakes me up. (and my wife:(
I got up partly to keep her from being disturbed by me. I usually have a hard time going to sleep with ANY sound or light in the room.

Oh well, Maybe it will pass in a few more days.
If I'm sitting up, I don't cough as much. BUT, I can't sleep sitting up. I never have been able to do that.
I'm a little more lucid than when I wrote the first message. This one only took 10min:)

Source of all your physical problems is your mental state.

Insomnia is not that random ... you obviously have too much on your mind , thinking about various stuff and thinking how to realise and deal with them, then you want to do so right now which prevents your from simply relaxing.

Tell you what, take some time in the evenining and to some running or jogging. Once you are exhaused or worn from the day, last thing you want is not be able to fall asleep. Which will happen real fast.

I spend a lot of time in front of my computer which is very bad for me .
By midnight I still feel the same as in noon , which is everything but sleepy. I go get some sleep at like 3 or 4 AM.

When I have something to do over a day, even mental work over physical (projecting PCBs and makign schematics, soldering stuff), it's much easier to simply crash into your bed early and get some quality sleep.

Try to fill your day with scheduele of stuff you like doing, so instead of rolling over in your bed until 5 AM thinking of stuff you *could've done*, you'll simply fall asleep to get some rest for the next day.

This is experience talking ... I once tried going to sleep at like 8 PM because I needed to get up really early. No freaking way, I was rolling around in my bed for like, 3 hours or so, thinking about stuff which I'd much rather do now instead of trying to get sleep.

Hope you get some good rest soon, lack of sleep will eventually do a lot of damage.

There's a lot of wisdom in your post Eudaimonium.
I went and laid down for another 45min-1hr and decided it wasen't working so got back up.
I REALLY wish I could get some decent exercise everyday, but I'm dissabled to boot, and have a hard time even walking. I haven't been able to run for almost 10yrs due to lower back trouble and MAJOR balance problems. (I fall a lot):(
Back when I was able to exercise, I didn't have nearly as much sleeping problems. I still had some even then but that was mostly due to my job and getting called several nights a week in the middle of the night.:tired:

I spend most of my time in front of a computer too. NOT good, but my physical condition really dictates what I can do.

I've tried the going to bed very early thing, and I just toss and turn as well.

I GOTTA get out of this rut somehow!! My wife and I used to go fishing quite a bit during the summer but even that is dificult now since it takes me so long to walk/shuffle to the pond we go to.

I never have good days anymore, just less crappy days.
O well, looks like today is going to be one of those crappy days.:(

Thanks for the advice,
Rod

If your cough is that bad I'm sure your doc would call in pheneragan (spelling?) and codeine syrup, that stuff is great, and i've found that if the recommended dosage doesn't do it, twice that does, for sure, put you out. :)

Are you good in electronics?

Take time and design schematics and then boards for , say, 555 timer to TTL modulate a DDL driver so you can have awsome looking timetunel effect wih spirograph.

Then make it, test it, troubleshoot it.

Feeling of acomplishement , and rewarding in this hobby is great.

I could help you out with schematic and/or board as needed, as long as you can do some boards and soldering on your own.

You will feel better, knowing that you just made a nice project which half the people on this planet cannot do.

Sorry about the running stuff, I didn't know you were disabled, just disregard that - you'll just bring more harm to yourself and nobody wants that to you.

My girlfriend has a book, the joys of machine knitting. I keep it beside the bed at all times. If sex doesn't work to tire me out I read a few pages of this. 5 minutes later and I am nodding off, works EVERY time!

You've built up an immunity up to Xanax and Ambian is the problem. I go through this all the time because I cant sleep from back pain. Every month take a full week off, and let your body come down. You're body is obviously toxic if both meds are not knocking you out. It will suck for a few days, but you can get past it. You're not sleeping now, so you have no excuse not to do it.

I'll probably get flamed for this. But try cannabis if you have access to it, you don't have to smoke it - you can eat it an hour or two before you go to bed, I've found that it's nice in tea. My friend has trouble sleeping and he uses cannabis to help him sleep.

From personal experience some of the best sleeping I've done was when I went to bed stoned, usually get some pretty decent dreams too.

If you're in the US and in a state with medicial cannabis, go to your doctor and tell him you are having trouble sleeping and that pills and normal methods are not working and ask to be put on medical cannabis. You'll want a strain that is more "indica" than "sativa".

FINALLY got SOME sleep! I layed down again about 11AM and the last time I remember looking at the clock, it was 12 noon. I woke up at about 4pm so at least I got some sleep. I feel a little less crappy now.

Woodofcville,
Odd thing about me and codeine, it "WIRES" me even more.
If I take it, I will definitely have insomnia but it does make me somewhat loopy. It does usually help with cough though. (which is the main problem right now) Unfortunately, I got up too late to call my doctor today.

Eudaimonium,
There was a time when I was considered a pretty good electronics tech.
I've been in the bizz for 30+ years, but my skills have waned alot since my accident in 2003. I was doing 2-way and amateur radio repair for the most part. I have designed and built a few odds and ends over the years but it was mostly radio equipment related.
I have a room full of test equipment and parts that is just gathering dust now:cryyy:
If I can ever get my health better, maybe I can use it again.
It did give me a great sense of accomplishment to repair a radio, or even build a project.
Ahhh...maybe someday, if I can get my brains to work again.:undecided:

BTW....
It's amazing how close your diagnosis was, from just my first post.
It sounds like you have an aptitude for being a health care proffesional.

Thanks,
Rod

I worked a graveyard shift job for a while and eventually quit in part because of how it wreaked havoc on my sleep cycle. I'd come home at like 8-9 in the morning with the bright morning sunlight in my face which would really wake me up. Then it would take me like 2 hours of hanging out in the dark to get tired again. Also it was harder to fall asleep in general even when I was tired. Right now it takes anywhere from 5-20 minutes for me to fall asleep at night.

When I tried sleeping during the day it took me hours sometimes to get to sleep and the whole time I'd be tossing and turning getting pissed off thinking about how much time I was wasting trying to sleep when I could be doing something fun or productive. Then I'd finally get to sleep and be woken up like 4 hours later by the neighbors tearing down a tree, running a lawnmower, landscaping crews, garbage trucks, someone opening/shutting the front door loudly and other normal daytime activities. Also it wasn't like waking up in the middle of the night when I can fall back asleep in minutes. I'd wake up and simply not be tired anymore. Then at like midnight when I'd be going to work I'd be so tired that I felt like curling up and sleeping on the floor. Something was just downright unnatural about the whole thing and it felt like I was in the twilight zone and out of synch with the normal world at times. When I needed to do stuff I felt like sleeping and when I needed to sleep I felt like doing stuff.

Moral of the story=Graveyard shifts suck...Don't work them if you can possibly avoid it.

Anyway here are a few helpful hints if you're having trouble sleeping.
-Don't just lay in bed getting aggravated if you don't feel like sleeping. It isn't helpful.
-Avoid sunlight if you're trying to sleep during the day. It basically triggers your body to wake up.
-Have a nice hearty meal a few hours before you plan on sleeping.
-Run the ac to keep the room at a comfortable temperature. Trying to sleep in a 90+ degree room sucks.
-Yes what diachi mentioned works wonders. I won't go any further into the subject.
