So I've been browsing flea-bay searching flashlights by battery configuration and this is one I grabbed up.

I am pretty sure I can stuff a Oclaro 700mW 638 (HL63193MG) diode in it and run it at 1w. I am also looking at a 10440 side clicky as an even smaller host for the HL63193MG.

I plan to fabricate a "pill" from some aluminum tubing and thread the front end of a 12mm module with 3 element lens into a recessed hole (threaded at bottom to match the 12mm module) in the pill, the pill will extend around the driver, I should be able to solder the contact board to the driver and complete the diode assembly.

(If this method works I hope to be able to fab "pills" of this style in common "Cree" bulb assembly dimensions.)

This is also all fabrication I can do on my drill press with a milling vice attached to it.

Now I know that I can swap the 14500 for a pair of 14250s...

Would there be any advantage to using a pair of 14250s over a single 14500, such as other diodes they could power?



Yes, very short runtime, I want to be able to use the HL63193MG and light a smoke or light tinder items from time to time.

You would do well to use the 14500 - 2x14250 will blow up a red diode, not to mention having less than half the capacity of a 14500. Also you should go with the ML501P73 - it is a much more resilient diode with the same power.

I had no intention of using 2x14250s to push the red, I know the 14500s are the way to go there.

My question was if there would be more power hungry diodes that would run on 2x14250s but couldn't run on a 14500.

Excluding the limited runtime/capacity issues.

I'll look into that ML501P73.

I'll look into that ML501P73.

You might just barely be able to run an M140 or A140, but not much else. The voltage drop of such tiny batteries will be very, very high at 1-2A load.

Thanks, that was about what I figured.

Would that also make a NDG700 700mW 520nm diode another option?

That would be a lot of green in a tiny package.

You would need a 1.8A boost driver.. I don't know of any around right now so that's certainly something to consider.

Remember the m140 and ndg700 will rapidly heat up. You will need to limit to a 30sec on 1min off cycle with this much power, or maybe even less.

DTR offers at least 2 that even have adjustable pots.

A 10sec/1min cycle is more than enough of a duty cycle for my needs.

He may have a couple attached to diodes, but he does not have any boost drivers in stock. You may see he has Linear drivers in stock (X-drive and Super X-Drive which are linear drivers and to run M140 or NDG700 you will need to have atleast 2 cells or 7.4-8.4V to run them with a XD or SXD).

The purpose of a boost driver is to take a 3.7v cell and boost it to 5.5v+

That is what I was figuring. I don't mind waiting on DTR to get things in stock, he may have just got a part in stock that I need for my first build. This is just a side project I'm toying with.

Maybe a matched set of 1w red, blue, violet and green would be neat to add to the collection at some point.
