I picked up one of these yesterday for $5, a bit of serendipity actually, I was driving and spotted a second hand computer store, grotty looking place with hand drawn signs all over the front of it, so pulled in on the off chance.
The red diode in this drive is a closed can, 5.6mm diode soldered in two places onto a square metal heatsink/mount. I found this post dealing with these diodes and had a bit of a read:

I found it quite easy to separate this diode from the mount, I used a small, sharp screw driver to cut/chisel away the solder from each side them with two pairs of pliers gave the metal bracket a twist. The diode broke away cleanly with only a little solder still on it. When I pressed the diode into an aixiz module this softer solder just sheered off - a little more force with the vice than usual, but nothing horrific.
I made a quick DDL driver using some new 100ohm trimpots I have. I mucked around with different resistors until the driver gave me a very smooth power gradient from 60mA up to 300mA.
Started testing the setup at 75mA and worked up from there. I currently have it running at 200mA, which I realise is probably pushing it a bit for a 16X, but it isn't getting noticeably hot and seems quite stable for the moment. Besides, this cost me $5 so I consider it an experiment.
I can't find a power graph for this diode (or comparable diode). Does anyone know of a mA/mW plot for these?
