RPL laser?

Since i joined this forum, i read everywhere about RPL lasers. I know that they are bigger than pens, but for what is that a abbreviation and why are they build bigger?

it would be very fine if you can answer a noob a silly question, but i have really no clue what rpl style means.

RPL is actually a product name for Optotronics' Rechargeable Portable Laser.
I believe that is the acronym.

RPL "style" generally refers to the larger, more powerful, more expensive lasers.
They are built bigger because they use much more powerful diodes. The large heat-sink is needed to dissipate heat produced by the diode so that the laser can be used without short duty cycles like in pens.

There are other lasers (non-RPLs) with the same basic design. For example, the CNI built PGL-III, SKY's portable lasers, and also other generic types like those sold at DX.

Bigger because:

They have more material (metal) to dissipate more heat, because:

They use higher power pump diodes and bigger modules.

Thus they're more stable.


RPL is a portable laser from Optotronics.

The only true 100% duty cycle portable laser is the Hercules from Laserglow. But those are much larger and have are fan-cooled.
The lower power PGLs (Laserglow's Aires for example) & RPLs can also be run continuously, but I have never heard of a 100% duty >250mW green laser in a true portable format.

If you look at the review in my signature, I own a custom made host by a member in this forum with a similar design to the RPL

It's a little smaller but looks very cool I hope to get one made up as an exact copy soon with a local machinist
