RPL-300 and a round cut diamond...any ideas ?

ok, its that time of life for me, Im getting engaged ::)
My girl is getting a ring with an 0,5 karat, good VS2 clarity, round cut diamond.
I've also upgraded from RPL-225 to RPL-300 from Jack - the package is on the way.
So the question for me (obviously) is what can I do with my RPL-300 and that 5 mm in width diamond :P

I hope You guys are gonna help me out here with some ideas cause I wanna have some fun with that thing too damnit :P

It will probably reflect cool paterns on the wall but there be no safe way to see it, if you used goggles it might be hard to see all the patterns it makes, if you dont you can go blind with that much power, although you could just put a camera infront of your face and look thru that but if it hits the camera it can burn out pixels of the camera...or so people say, i personaly have shined my diy red into my phone camera for 20 sec did nothing might just of been lucky it was an old phone i was gona throw away :P

My friend "had" a Canon EOS 30D...we went to take some street night shots on a bridge...he left the shutter open on a tripod for a few seconds and one of the cars hit the long beams into the open shutter from very close, but just for a instant...the sensor died instantly and was beyond any repair...they had to exchange it to a new one.
So I will not try my cammera (EOS 40D) and I dont have a camcorder so it leaves gogles :P

Shining lots of photons into a 350 ml year old piece of shiny rock, I wonder if its gonna be any cool :)

and i tried shining my diy red into a glass prism, not a good idea. a concentrated beam of red laser hit me square in the eye and i temporarily lost my vision for a good 5 min. id think a diamond would produce very different results...
 
Yeah...I guess getting blind from a laser right before the wedding might suck a little.
And what a dumb way to go blind too :P
So...first Im gonna shine my 5mw greeny pointer into the diamond and see what happens.
If its gonna project any cool stuff I'll use the RPL.

talk about a potential bummer :P
it might be worth making sure!
 
I highly doubt it would do anything at all because it is clear, unless you hapened to shine a 300w at it to see the nice patterns it makes while your 6000 dollor diamond crumbles slowly away....

Surely theres these little inclusions in most diamonds unless its a perfect diamond which costs prolly like eleventeen milion dolars and I cant afford that.
These small inclusions might get heated up real quick cause they're small and dark,
prolly...

and it might blow up ?
 
I have a 3mm cubit zurconian I found on the ground in my store. This thing is faceted to death and I've shone my 130mw green laser into it and my Diy Red's and both create lots of patterns on teh ceiling. Basically it acts as a Starfield difraction grating cutting the beam up into thousands of little beams of light. I wouldn't worry too much about the inclusions unless you can see them clearly. and don't leave it on too long or any heat generated will cause the diamond to crack. To be honest the effect wasn't too impressive and I didn't repeat it!

Damn...this means that I aint getting any proper laser fun from that diamond. I guess I'll let my girl stare at it an and get me some cool optical stuff for the RPL. Any sugeestions ? :)

Same as, I have a 20mm dia cubic Z, it gives lots of dots and that is about all...I made the mistake of sitting it on the aperture of my first greenie, poiny end down.... It scratched the lens..... :-[ Lesson learned......

Unless you have one ungodly powerful laser (and while a 300mW RPL is enough to be a serious eye hazard, as far as ungodly lasers go, its baby's play) you don't have to worry at all about hurting the diamond. All its gunna do though is take that beam, split it up, and shine it every which way. With fog the effect would be kinda cool, but as said above its also going to be one hell of an eye hazard. I'd suggest just picking up some diffraction gratings ecause those split up the beam, but all in one general direction.
 
I was just bein safe. Gawd the last thing I'd want to happen is the diamond to crack then i'm shelling out $$$ to replace an engagement stone!!! :)
 
Naw...I dont think that anybody here seriously thought that a 300mw green beam would hurt any diamond :)
but...
I obviously did some research before buying the ring and I found out that they do use lasers to engrave stuff in diamonds and also drill and cut diamonds with lasers these days.
I'd suspect that lasers used for this would not be DPSS but realy high power pulse lasers or some other industry type laser.
Anyways Im gonna be carefull with my eys when shining my RPL thru the diamond :)

Any suggestions on what inexpensive optics/toys I could get for my RPL ?
 
diamonds are the best heat-conductors around. like 20x better than silver (best metal). so it wont change anything how long you shine a laser on a diamond. well, except you heat it above, say, 700°, where it would start to form co2, like burning 8although i read 4000° somewhere else). anyway, to do anything to a diamond with a laser, you would need some really badass laser, and ns-pulses too i bet. oh, and some funny focus, so only the right spot is engraved/cut, and not the whole beam-path! i wonder at what wavelength a diamond would be opaque?
