Right driver for dvd-burner diode?

Hi, there...I have the same diode I want to put into a tiny host and I didn't think I had enough room for a DDL due to the battery capacity...my host will accept a single 18500 so I have 3.7v to play with...what I am not sure about is the dropout voltage and the voltage across this diode...will I run into problems there with a 3.7v supply? I have several LM1084 ICs so I could wire up a small enough DDL if 3.7v is enough to drive the DDL and diode.

My alternate idea was to not even use a driver and try the KipKay method of just using a resistor to limit the current...any ideas as to what resistor value one would use with this method? Should a regular rectifier N1004 type diode or two be put in line with the resistor only method to drop the voltage some?

Last questoin...can someone here twill me what the voltage across most red diodes is?
