RGB Laser - Living Room

Hi all
I am looking at getting a RGB laser for my living room as i'm a bit of a lighting geek and already have 8 light scanners in the room. The room is 6808mm by 4552mm.

I'm a bit concerned most RGB lasers are at least class 3b and it would be very easy for someone to turn around and look directly into the laser. Am I right to be concerned? If so do you know of any less powerful RGB lasers? Or am I best off getting one laser light of each colour?

You actually measured your room with millimeter accuracy?

That problem with most RGB lasers in projectors is that they're almost all going to be Class 3b and above in order to make the dot visible when the beam is moving quickly. Also some of the color channels, notably the blue 445nm laser channel, can't be brought down in power below about 250mW unless you build/buy one that is made with some of the more expensive lower-powered OSRAM diodes.

Yes, your room is pretty small for a laser projector like that. Still, if you can ensure that people won't be able to go where any of the beams are located you can still use it so long as you are only projecting onto matte surfaces. If people can walk into the beams, it'll be unsafe.

If you're not using a projector, you might be able to get away with having the single beam high above people's heads so they can't stick anything in the way. It's not quite as fun, but you can still do stuff like make liquid sky effects, etc.

Thanks for your help though, doesn't look like I will be able to get one of the lasers then. My friend has a green class 3b laser in his living room and said although it is very bright it doesn't cause any issues as it quickly scanning. Is he just lucky or are the Red & Blue lasers more likely to cause issues?

Well it depends on the patterns. The scanners in your room are already Class 3b lasers, and would be dangerous if someone got close to the output. For the RGB module it'll depend on how fast the patterns are being generated, how close the person is to the aperture, etc.

The wavelengths themselves won't be a big issue. You can be blinded by any of them. An RGB setup does have more lasers though, so the combined power might be greater than your friend's system. I guess what I'm saying is that your friend's setup is probably no safer than one you'd set up, or even your current setup.

I think I am going to pass on a RGB projector now as when the lasers are combined I could have up to 500mw. Just to clarify my current scanners are just normal light scanners which is why I am keen to add a laser into the mix.

I am running a 500mw RGB aimed at my ceiling.

Using some diffraction gratings and lumia glass,

it creates some nice patterns on the ceiling.
