not sure which forum this belongs in... but here it is:

Has anyone ever successfully 'thinned' solder paste that's gotten a bit stiff?

A while back I bought a supply of it from DX; but then became unable to use it...
Now I'm beginning to claw my way back up to where I can do a bit of hobbying - but just found that it's all gone rather stiff (the solder paste). Not completely dry, but not terribly usable either.

I'm in the middle of a small project that has sm ic's, so I really need nice smooth solder paste!

Thanks for any guidance...

oh, btw, I'm talking about "solder paste" - with lead etc in it; not "soldering paste", which is flux.

:)

Depending on the flux used in the paste, Distilled water or 99% Isopropyl alcohol.
Take a whiff and see if you recognize the smell.

thanks Mike - already tried water, I'll try the alcohol.
(and I have one of 'em soaking in laquer thinner just for kicks)(unless the container got dissolved - better go check on that one...)

:gj:Good shooting, Mike - right on target!

You just saved 6 little jars of LodeStar solder paste... need any?

:thanks:

When I was in industry, solder flux was either rosin in ethyl alcohol or water based acid. Yours must be rosin based.
