I am curious how difficult it is to remove the green laser module from a CNI pen? Since it's already IR filtered, and probably a pretty good module, I am considering dropping it into a more fitting host. I am looking at one of the focusable, 1x18650 hosts from DX or similar (maybe a jayrob) and drop in my CNI pen module. I know I will have to run a 3v 18650, but I will gain a lot of runtime, increase heatsinking, and be able to get some degree of focusing out of it. I'm just not sure how to get the module out of the CNI pen, and I'm a little bit afraid of doing damage. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

It should be relatively easy. Just push the module out with a metal rod after you unscrew the top part, and it should come out without too much force.

Do you push from the lens side (obviously not contacting the lens), or from the battery side?

Making it focusable will not be a fruitful endeavor.
As it is, the beam is too narrow for focusing at long distance.

If you want to do this, you will need additional optics to expand the beam first. Then you will need to drill out the aperture of the lens nut a millimeter or two, and then make sure the lens can be adjusted to the correct distance for focus at infinity.

Also, the CNI module is shorter than most of the "Generic" modules used in the cheap pointers, so you will have to account for that.

Getting the module out is not difficult but will require a bit of ingenuity. It is pressed and glued in with some tough epoxy and the enamel on the host is not scratch resistant.

If you can get the "front" of the module out, you press out the module from the lens side.

I would push it out the front, and if tight, try warming the outer case w/ a hair air blow drier, as the outer shell would expand and this is the reverse of the way it was put in, but be sure you are not pushing on the driver board. IF RA is right and they always epoxy it in then it is not likely worth trying to dis assemble though. -Glenn
