Interesting suggestion for modding the Arctic with a remote switch or external power supply. Details from this website.

He measured the current draw at 530mA....
 





LMFAO! I just pulled a random module 445nm and tested it
at 530mA.

It gave out a whopping 395mW with tri-element AR coated glass lens

:crackup: 1W my arse... Didnt think it was that bad though.

Do they even put a class IIII sticker on it?

Lets not go over the deep end. :tsk:

We know they pull more. Daguin sold 2 at 750 and 795mW.
Kenom measured one at 950 and got it over 1000 with some creative air cooling.
Plexus has one over 1W and another at 950
rkozola just posted a G2 at 830

530 mA seems low.

shall I say, lack there of.

TBH, I dont really care what these put out. I wouldnt waste my money, nor
wait 3 months to get one. IMO, the average build on LPF is still better.

All these lasers have going for them is the look of the host, the rest is fail.

All these lasers have going for them is the look of the host, the rest is fail.

When the Arctic was first available, no one knew what to expect. The specs were great, the price was amazing. Wicked had a fairly decent rep for their lasers. People ordered them, and a lot of them were sold. I'm sure a lot of us would not have ordered it if they knew how long it would take and the various issues with performance and service, myself included.

I have seen many posts about problems with home builds; driver failures, poor lens performance, blown diodes. Some Arctic buyers weren't interested or capable of building their own. Are you saying that means we shouldn't have a laser? Well, we have them and would like to use them. What we want is information and advice. What we don't need is your 20/20 hindsight or your LMFAO taunting.

As far as fail: I can focus mine and burn as good as any home build if I wish or as set it to as tight a beam. It can use different lens. It will run continuously as long if not longer than any other host. Have you got a hand held you can leave on for an hour or longer? Can it be wired for remote control?

So far mine has burned for hours. Maybe it will quit tomorrow, but I didn't know that when I ordered it, so what am I supposed to do, throw it away?
It could just last a long time.

Wicked is not known around here to have a good reputation, that is both pre and post arctic.

The only difference now is they have dropped their prices, im guessing do to a serious drop in sale, or similar motivation.


Look, you posted a video, I commented on the video... I have not seen
much positive review with these lasers, and the video just adds to what people
are saying...

Couple that with poor customer service, and I still would not waste my money.
To each his own I guess, but testing a laser thats should be drawing close to an amp,
and only showing a hair over 500mA just lends credence to the stigma which
has been following them since they started arriving at doorsteps..

My last handheld was 1.6W, and no, I highly doubt yours will burn even nearly as well.

Yes my on times are shorter, but if you want more, buy a labb'y.

Going by the specs given by WL, these units are ridiculously overrated.

My next handheld will be 3W's of 445, just waiting on the host. Add in
cylindrical corrective optics, it will be untouchable as far as beam quality
and monster power is concerned.

Total build cost 100$ and my time. Like I said, I PERSONALLY would not
waste the money ;)

Again, I'll say I am not telling people to rush out and buy an Arctic. What I am doing is suggesting ways to get more out of the ones they already have.
The discussion of what they are worth or how they are made has been posted ad nauseam.

As far as Wicked Lasers rep, I just seem to recall seeing their lasers (not just Arctics) listed in quite a few sigs.

I posted a video to point out a unique feature of the Arctic, which is not possible on most hand helds.
I thought the current draw was odd, therefor the ...

I should not have said it will burn as good as "any" home build. I should have said "most". I stand corrected.

I don't need a "labb'y" to get longer burns, mine already burns longer than "most" hosts. Technically, I could hook up an external power supply to the Arctic and run it as a "labb'y".

You definitely have some nice builds, I look forward to seeing the 3W!

1. Attach the WL Arctic to a robot for use in the police force.
and
2. Be able to make a robot, but not understand the concept of a shunt...

I *faceplam* everytime I watch/read anything from awesomelasers..

That guy from AL is a perv. We looked up his record and he did time for playing with little boys.

I'm not recommending the website or vouching for the reputation of the owner. The idea of robot dazzlers using 1W lasers is nuts. I was just pointing out an interesting idea. Someone with more tech than me should be able to create a relatively compact remote sensor and switch. The connections are already built into the Arctic.

under a 2 screw plate... He seems to do things at the speed of WL...IMO

The 530mA he tested was at the battery end of the Boost Driver..
not the output (LD) end.. (The Arctic only uses 1pc 3.7V battery)
I'd be surprised that the Arctic in the video outputs >300mW...

I just fixed a 445nm Build for a member and it outputs 966mW
using a boost FlexDrive and 2500mA 18650 battery and at the
battery contacts pulled ~2.2 Amps...

The Info on this guys site is misleading...
A1 amp electronic switch will burn out and blow as will 1 Amp rated
Relay contacts run at 2 Amps..

If anyone has an Arctic with fully a fully charged >2000mA 3.7V battery...
and an LPM.. could you check the Laser's output power and the current
draw at the battery/switch and post it here...

I may be wrong about the Arctic... and WL is able to produce 1000mW
at 530mA at the battery with so magical electronic circuit....:thinking:

I tried to measure mine. I only have a 2A shunt. Went off scale.

Its a micro boostdrive and not a flexdrive.:shhh:
