Uh... I'm really not sure what is going on. I plug in my 650nm laser diode, through a ddl driver set to ~270ma and ... its white. like blue whiteish. Not red. ._.;

EDIT: Turns out its a blue laser.. you can't really blame me, I was told it was red... :thinking: I think it is, anyway.. I don't see any other reason for a red laser to be blue.. Though it seems a tad purple to be blue. Any ideas what laser this could be?

Where'd you get it from, how much was it, and how much is your output?
If you answer ebay, <$20, and you're getting 270mW, you have just made a LOT of people happy, or maybe just me, or maybe just pic's or you just woke up and confused your blue for a red.
 
Kinda purpleish actually.. And I purchased it from Fenzir, who told me it was this:

Unless both me and my camera are tired... lol

And it doesn't light matches. Then again, it made them smolder, so I blame the match.
 
It could be a blueray diode, 405nm. Edit: Just saw the pictures, it is a bluray diode.

And he said he is running the diode at 270mA, not 270mW. You may want to figure out exactly what you have before you keep running it, you might be at or over the recommended current for your diode.

I would love to do that, but I have no way of actually identifying the diode.

Also, just curious, don't blue-ray diodes have a different pin-out? I remember looking at pictures, and the blue-ray's had positive on top and negative on bottom, while the red has positive on top and negative on the side. I wired it that way, and it comes on..
 
Really... Okay then.

What is the max current for a phr-805t? I'd hate to be overdoing mine. (though it did seem a bit weak.. but bluerays may be that weak?)
 
Not likely with 270mA, phr-805t's usualy LED at 200mA, but it is a blu-ray.
 
Wait, so it should have died already? Because its been running a solid few minutes with no issues or heating..
 
yeah phr shouldn't be run past 130-140 6x shouldn't be run past 200 i believe my advice. lower the current until you know what it is
 
Can you post a pic of the back of the diode? Some 405's have markings which we could possibly identify.
 
There are no markings, I just checked. Just goldish color, three pins. Nothing else, unfortunately.
 
Seeing as how there are no markings and assuming there is no help from whoever sent you the diode it will be a heck of a task to identify the diode.

The easiest (only?) way would be to start at low currents and work your way up while metering output with a LPM. Then you could find power/current graphs of common bluray diodes to help guess what the diode is. Of course that doesn't do much good if you don't have a LPM.

Personally, I would set it at 110mA. If it's a PHR it will live at that current. If it's anything higher it will live a long happy life. I don't know the threshold currents of the 10-12x diodes, but I assume it is well below 110mA...

Any ideas what this diode is capable of? When its pitch black in the room it doesn't make a beam. Or light matches.

There is no way to tell what a diode is capable of with measurements like that. There are way too many variables involved. What sort of match? How dark a room? How dirty is the room? What lens? What batteries?

All of those questions were rhetorical, and my point is there is no way to tell :D
