Recommend 5mw IR pointer






I have no clue where to get a 5mw IR laser, you can take a normal 532nm DPSS laser pointer and remove the crystals to get IR very cheaply, if you want. However, when you ask for 5 milliwatts, now you are making it a tough job to find.
 
Buy one from laserbtb. They sell 5mw pens. Hap was considering getting one a while back. No guarantees though that it will be 5mw or less.
 
Why would you want a 5mw IR pointer? You cannot see the beam/dot, and it cannot burn things. I guess you could look at it through an IR camera....
 
Correct, using with NVGs. I want to try out something low power, and perhaps build something stronger from there. I'm worried about blooming out my goggles while using it. I had the experience of medical Personel doing their thing in the back of a helicopter using an IR light, don't know the specs of it but holy cow it was bright! Couldn't even look in that direction.
 
If you just want to try out something low power why not get
an IR Led or even a few ??
5mw seems a little low for NVG illumination.

Exactly... He better also buy some appropriate Laser
Safety Google before he goes blind.
I still think he should do some testing with IR LEDs
before he gets an invisible and possible 200mW Laser.

It all seems fun and games until you turn it on, and you can't seem the beam. I find my 800mw infrared laser terrifying, this is because even though it has a key switch and shutter (thank goodness) you still don't know what it's reflecting off of.

It is terrifying because it seems safe cause you can't see it but I rarely use it because of this.

I literally do use it without goggles on UNLESS it is in a clamp pointing at something within 6 inches and I have tested the surface with a visible laser to be matte and the light is not reflecting. I can see this with my Jakks Pacific NVG. And I never turn it on whatsoever without laser goggles.

I use an adjustable water cooled 40 Watt IR Laser
in the shop for testing new coating formulas.
It is solidly mounted to the test bench and shines
into a beam stop so that it can't arbitrarily move.

It scare the bejesus out of me every time I use it
so I'm extra careful not to use it when others are
in the shop.

I see nothing wrong with high power IR lasers. With proper protection. Goggles and goggles for bystanders. I would love to have a CO2 laser but that's someday. I am much more afraid of microwaves much more as they can cook you and stuff. Xrays scare me even more. why some people want them I have no idea why.

X-rays are definitely scary! However, anything below ~355nm is pretty dangerous too and that's well into the UV spectrum. If you aren't careful with these wavelengths the chances of eye damage or burns is very real.
