Quickie review of laserland 510nm 5mw

I ordered 2 of these innocent looking pen lasers. I was stoked to have 2
510nm direct greens at 5mw to show people! Ubiquitous newwish style
pen host...2aaa cell powered. There is a label by the aperture that says
Laserlands. No other labels...no hint of correct polarity. So I popped 2 cells
in and green light poured forth...it was bright...way too bright. And the wrong
color...DPSS green 532nm. It also has a very bright tiny beam...69mw on the
laserbee!!!
The next pen which looked identical in every way emitted no light. So I put the
cells in the opposite way and green light came forth...it looks close to my 515nm Nichia diode home built in color...just a bit longer in wavelength.
Nice and pretty though...it tested at 14mw on the laserbee.

I am not happy I got only one direct green. But the dpss is a beast with a tiny
diameter beam...popping balloons, cutting black tape...very not eye safe.

The direct is nice...I love the color and the typical pudgy diode beam.

I really wanted 2 directs...@5mw. Total fail there. The boxes both say 510nm
and no power rating. They came from china direct from laserland.

If you try these out be careful. Like forest gump's box of chocolates you never know what you are going to get! Wear goggles!
Test!
Purchased on laserland's ebay page for about 18 bucks each. I am a bit
disappointed but don't feel ripped off. The pens are identical in appearance
and besides...the dpss is the best cheap host one I have ever used. First run
made 46mw...when it got warm 69mw. And the beam is so tiny and bright.
Probably no ir filter either...but it is stable. Meh...and goggles required. And looks yellowish compared to the diode green.

Sorry for the lack of pics...everyone has seen this pen style.

I hope this quick review helps some of you considering one of these.

Well, I appreciate your review. I have been wondering if this might be a pen I should order, but from everything you've said.....I think not. :thanks:

Yep. Not worth risking the camera for beam and dot pics. Not 5mw.
and based on my sample size of 2 a 50% percent chance of DPSS.

I have a really pretty 5mw/ 46mw (measured)high/low power 520nm pen.
I forgot who I got it from. A quick press turns the laser on at 5mw
until you press quickly again. A long press and it waits a few seconds
and puts out 46mw. It is the shortest wavelength green I own...sold as a 520
it is shorter than my 515nm nichia or my jetlaser ple pro 1+ watt lasers. It's
downsides are a crappy keyswitch in the tail and the slow and lame interface.
prettiest color by far though. And a switchless tail came with it so it is usable.
but I wanted something cheap with the same color. No dice!!

The laserland pen is between the jetlaser and nichia in color. IE not that
short.

I really want a real 510 or 505. I guess I will wait.

Caveat...I cannot measure wavelength. But I can compare FWIW.

Check out my signature if you want to see some unusual green wavelengths. I have a 502nm at over 100 mW and a 520nm that actually measures 510nm. Below that are a 493nm that is greenish blue in color. These have all been possible because of Sharp's trial to get a 480nm and a 505nm diode. Hoping for a 488nm diode in the future.

I envy your epic selection of greens. I seriously wonder if my favorite
is indeed 510. It is very different from my 86mw 515nm Nichia home built.

I can't wait for the short greens to be common in pens.

I have enough class 3 and 4 greens. Something safe to demonstrate
would be nice. I have only one Eagle pair...

You can pick up a 505nm diode on eBay for $35.00. Or, you can bid on one as they have been coming up for auction. They are case positive, so you"ll need a Blitz Linear Driver from SL.

I am going wait. No rush. I was hoping...but that's ok.
In a few years or so they will be 10 bucks in pens.

Hopefully!

LLands does not have a great rep here for returns or other issues.

18$ will get you 6 green 532nm pen pointers and most, if not all will be way over 50 mW. .. and 405s can run even higher.

Yep...not recommended by me! I have a pile of crappy newwish greens...and they all are pretty bad. This one is actually fun to play with.

Point taken, between shipping and hassle...not worth it and a bad deal.
