questions about photons and the physics of light

The similarity between electron orbits and TEM mode patterns is no coincidence at all.

Both find their roots in the wavefunction. For atoms this is a 3 dimensional function, for lasers it is a 2 dimensional function since we usually accept the longitudinal component als 'multimode' by default.

Without making things more complicated then they are, both are the result of exactly the same thing: distributing energy density in resonance over a finite area (or volume).

These patterns are very universal, and even work with one dimensional systems: for example, you can pluck a guitair string at its ground frequency, or any harmonic, but nothing in between. This is so because it has a defined length, and both ends must be at a vibrational minumum. You can fit 1, 2, 3 or more maxima between those, resulting in exactly the same pictures as the hydrogen orbitals, but obiously only a line trough them since we are working with 1 dimension only.

Btw: if you compare the hydrogen orbitals to laser pictures, you should notice that the enumeration is a bit different. What is labeled as 2,1,0 and 2,1,1 is named TEM 01 and 10 with lasers, but this is a matter of nomenclature, not of fundamental difference.

Cool, thanks. All I know about wave functions is that they help describe probabilities. And can you describe what you mean when you say guitar strings will resonate at any harmonic? Does harmonic mean multiple of a frequency? I thought they only resonated at their base frequency.

I don't really like the word coincidence, but how about this: similar math describes both situations very well. We often find repetitions of the same patterns in nature.

Totally agree. It's because everything really branches off the same thing. Everything in the universe can be put into one equation. Being said, Everything is nothing and nothing is everything, how ever you want to define it.

you cant put actual things in an equation, just logical concepts and expressions. if antimatter and matter would just be nice and equal the universe might just end up=0 lol. strange how from nothing, you can just pull nothing into 2 somethings that cancel each other out. well, it probably doesnt work that way, unless theres negative energy, if so then i guess theres potentially unlimited mass (and/or antimass) in the universe, its just that most is in the form of nothing. is there unlimited nothing? doesnt space require mass/energy to generate? theres a net surplus of space, might explain matter/anti matter imbalances. unless the space is just a result of that imbalance. sorry for the rambling, most of which is probably wrong lol.

Photons create all electomagnetic radiation, they are all the exact same, just different wavelengths. E=hc/lambda will decribe the energy for all electromagnetic radiation, if you know the wavelength ofcourse.

The laser transverse mode function and the electron distribution function both use Hermite Polynomials to describe the probability of a event.

The math is very similar.

can you tell us what the equation is please?

I wish I new it, plexus... :) I'm sure it's simple, but we got to find it. It's what Michio Kaku is trying to find. I believe Einstein also was on the search for it. Michio Kaku will mention him a lot. If string theory continues to be more understood and becomes more obviously valid, then we may start find these things out.

Also, as far as my quoted bit, just think about it for a while.
