Question for machinists.

So about a year ago I bought a lathe and I am still learning to ropes. There's only so much I can learn from Google and YouTube.

What I want to do is make a recessed area and have it be flat, so I can't use a drill bit.

How do I do this?
What bit do I use?

Can you grind your own tools, Or A boring tool can do that , its quite simple.. You can change the angle of the tool to a few degrees so the tip of the tool still points to the material from the inside...

So then I drill a large hole to get the tool in then mount it like this?

Yes and make the final cut like this so it has a streamlined finishing..

Yep boring bar will do that job... You could start the process with any of those though.
