question about voltage for 405nm pointers

eBay user heruursciences sells these 405nm modules quite often. My first observation is, his units take a AAA battery.

I'm just wondering what he has done exactly to work down the voltage on these diodes. It seems that most 405nm modules use substantially more voltage than 1.5V My first guess is that he is simply using less voltage but he specifically states "E2-Li not recommended" I assume because the higher voltage.

Anyone care to enlighten me? Thanks

I dont think these are the ps3 blu-ray diodes :-/
 
These are Bluray.

The Dorcy flashlight he has the LD in has a voltage boost circuit. If a 1.7V (E2) battery is used as a source, the voltage will boost too high and the LD will run at too high of a current.
 
I bought one of those a while back. He claimed 5mW output, but I read 100µW. I took it apart and it turned out the diode was dead. He used whatever driver was in the thing that previously drove the LED. It obviously didn't work too well. :-/
 
But are the standard blu-ray reader diodes everyone uses multimode like he states on his description? :-/

hmm that's strange, i'm pretty sure they are single mode, and i have one of the flashlights it does have a booster circuit inside it
