Why is the FDA associated with lasers, and laser safety? I though FDA is the FOOD and DRUG association. Lasers are neither food or drugs lol.

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but when I told my friends about the FDA regulations on lasers they looked at me as if I was stupid.

The FDA regulates basically any product in the US that they consider to be a health risk.

FDA got it because its non-ionizing radiation, and the origional rules were closely tied to medical lasers. NRC got the ionizing, FDA got the non-ionizing because of medical experience with X-rays.

This happened in 1970 or so, long before lasers were so common.

An act of Congress, not the FDA doing territory grabbing...
