I've actually pulled one completely out. the spring still retains the lens and there is nothing in the way to prevent all teh power going out the lens.

agreed. remove it entirely by cutting it out as SENKAT suggested.
I push the lens in all the way and it won't come out. discard the spring. It may scratch the lens.

Use an Exacto hobby knife. They are excellent for this modification. But just dont go too deep, otherwise your lens will be scratched.
