What is the minimum amount if milliwatts for a laser to
- start a match
- pop a balloon
- see the beam in daylight

For all three- red (660nm) green(532) and blue(445) thanks in advance! All answers appreciated!

There are more factors than power. Beam characteristics, color of designated material, wavelength of the laser (color) and more.

In general, you need at least 100mw to light a match and a little less to pop a balloon. This relates to all three colors.

For visibility in daylight, wavelength has a key role. Since human eyes are most sensitive to green, it will be seen better than other colors.

That means you'll need more power to see red or blue in daytime than green.

You need to define 'daylight' as well.

If you mean outdoors in the sun.. Your talking about powers that hobbyists will never have in a handheld. Namely 20W+ of some highly visible wavelength like 532nm.
 
i can see a 100mw in the daytime.... if im on axis.... with a fog machine.... staring very intently at the aperture....
 
are we taking about dot or beam??
because i can see my ~50mw green DOT in bright direct sunlight
 
Would also recommend that if you plan to get a laser for burning purposes that you get one with an adjustable focus.

My preference is for red lasers but that is just me. I like red.
 
Never, ever: dust, vacuum, or tidy up your home....dust and other particulates in the air are key to indoor beam viewing day or night :gj:
 
I'd recommend a 405nm laser for burning. It might not be the brightest but I got my 50mw for $9 on ebay and it can light white matches if you focus it and it can leave small burn marks in most walls even if they're whitish. Also get some kind of yellow or orange tinted goggles to use while burning up you don't need that high of a OD for 50 mw. Just remember that laser is 20 times brighter or so than it looks unless you are shining it on something that florescences.
 
By daylight I mean indoors with some lighting. What is the burning power of a 300mw 405nm laser? Ibuprofen200mg- haha

On the other hand: Vacuum AND Dust your home and immediately use you laser after for some EPIC beamage!

(A feather duster works best since it mostly just kicks up the dust, as does an old bag vacuum.)
 
Thanks for all the advice. I already have a 130mw red laser from wickedlasers. I purchased a 405nm 300mw from rayfoss yesterday for burning and I'm going to buy a 100mw green laser for visibility in a few days. I'm going to post a review and unboxing of the rayfoss laser and the green laser soon. Thanks for all your help
