Puzzle: Laser pointers to mark points on an ice rink?

Hello,

Looking for a way to build a stationary platform that is setup at center ice. Then have laser pointers set up to mark the ice with spots designated for cones or other things the athletes need to go around as part of a testing/combine. Basically looking for something that projects a mark on the ice that we can see and put a cone at versus having to get the measuring tape out and reset the whole course after they run the zamboni over the ice. Thoughts? I'd even consider 2 setups if there isn't a laser we could safely use to project all the way down the rink. Thoughts?

Injecting/embedding some marker under the ice would be safer, cheaper, faster, and easier. Is there a reason that won't work for you?

I can't inject it because we move around to different rinks and setup the "course" if you will. When we have to flood/clean the ice after x amount of athletes I want to avoid having to remeasure and mark again. This setup...if possible would make it much much faster and easier for us.

You could use a laser tape measure and set out plastic cones.

Or program your rink dimensions into a HH GPS then lay out plastic cones.

If you move around to different rinks you'd need to set the lasers up each time anyway. Better to just spend the time and set up the markers normally, rather than set up the lasers and markers.

From a platform this would be very difficult.

If you had some indoor ice rink with a tall ceiling it could be feasible to use a laser projector to mark where to put the cones for a certain configuration.

A platform would just be a pain though: if you don't get that exactly level and exactly positioned the markers would be way off, regardless of what exact laser solution (projectors, pointers on a jig etc) you would use.

Super budget they have put aside, I would think laser measuring, marking, etc. is the norm now in the Pro's. In any sport. No?

The costs and time of constructing such a device would greatly exceed the costs and time of simply using a measuring tape. It is possible, but you would not save time or money in the long run.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I understand the time and money component. But right now when you have an hour of ice time and you take up 15 minutes of it laying out ice, it feels like this might be worth exploring. I think you're right about the jig. We'd have to fix the lasers in position on a deck and then move that deck to center ice and have some levels on it and then go for it. At some combines the ice gets so torn up they want to run over it 2x in one session which requires another setup again which only emphasizes our need to figure something out. That said, thank you for the help, and please keep the ideas coming if you can.

I really appreciate this folks and thank you.
