The smartphone I want comes equipped with Windows Mobile 6. I know you can install other programs on it, but do they need to be special for a mobile device or do can it be anything you would install on your desktop PC? I'm not talking about big computer games like CS:S... just simple apps like Xfire, Winamp, and the like.

Nope, sorry, all the Windows Mobile devices I've ever heard of use a different processor than a Windows PC, so you can't just put a PC program on one.
Windows source code is usually pretty easy to recompile and get it to run on Windows mobile, but you need the source code and compiler.
OTOH, there's TONS of stuff out there, and a lot of the code that was written for older mobile devices is compatible with the newer ones.
