It's limp because they haven't added the hardening solution lightsabers need to stay perfectly erect & straight before being complete. Once that's added, the plasma blades are then cut into different lengths (with what I have no idea, wtf cuts a lightsaber) and those different lengths determine what host it will be installed into. Depending on what side of the force you're on or how tall you are, you may have a longer or shorter saber in the end.
If you spin the raw material for the construction of the lightsaber blade fast enough it becomes a light circular-saw. This is what's used for cutting lightsaber blades into bits.

Here's an idea. Why not just get a sword with a full tang and handle encased in ceramic? Next, have the core of the blade massively heated up so the metal part of the blame is glowing brightly. That would perform like a lightsaber.
