Possible First Car

$3000 to $4000 seems to be the right price range fora a 2000 S40 so $3500?? Maybe offer them $3200 see if they give a little off.
I don't understand the $4100 figure--sales tax is 7.5 % so on $3500 is 262.50 So $3762--What the other $400 for?

This one has the nice and expensive options of the day --leather, sunrook, heated seats , premium sound, etc and it is a small family business , local and capable of servicing it. If it appears to be a really nice shape---could very well be a nice car.

You didn't mention if they were going to give you a warranty-- but I think they have to give yo a 30 day or 1000 mile warrantee under the CA buy here pay here law. You have t be the judge. From the pictures of it i looks to be in good shape--pretty nice.

I think the 120,000 mile old Volvo is a better choice than the 162,000 Ascender.

The 5 owners in 15 years is not so bad ona 15 year old car, especially if the car was auctioned a few times.

You need to find out the cost of insurance to know the real cost involved in being able to have it.

Maybe have a 3rd party look it over if you have doubts.

It doesn't cost anything to look--so lookaround for what else might be possible with the $s you have available

Hey Encap!

The original price is $3,500 but the sale tax, along with other government costs brings it up to $4,100. Yeah, it's nice it has all the extra comfort :D

Pic of the engine is below. Looks like new:

Encap raises a very good point... registration doesn't cost $400 no matter how you break it down. Tell them you'll do it yourself, and actually do it yourself.

Hi Lehap,5 owners dont worry me so much alot of people sell their cars right at the point were the book value drops so they keep buying cars and dont loose to much money. Im sure in its 5 owners there were repairs that you wont have to do. I know CA has very strict emmision laws so make sure all is well that way. Like everyone posted do all the registering and insurance yourself, do you think they are charging you a runners fee? Cars are like watches, well built cars are fine watches but need to be treated nice and a Timex well "you know where im going" Those leather seats got to you didnt they!!

You need to a take a balanced look at everything involved.

Are you paying a premium buying the car from a Dealer---yes of course. If the Dealer is not far away from you and they will be taking care of any service needs at reasonable prices + if you like/trust they are OK people then it is not a big concern. The 30% off on any parts is a nice gesture--I don't think getting parts will be a problem as that model ran from 2000 to 2011.
Seems to be a nice car--sounds like everything has been taken care of by the Dealer that need attention. Dealer is supposedly highly experienced in Volvo and specializes in servicing them. That is worth something too.

Depends on your comfort level about the Dealer in particular and their representations about the car.
Balance that against the time and money to find one on your own, get it checked/evaluated, estimate cost of any repairs---get them repairs done and so on.

If you decide you want it---it is worth asking if the price is etched in stone----would they consider less than $3500--say $3200.

Here is a Motor Trend page showing value and cost of options when new for 2000 Volvo S40 : 2000 Volvo S40 Specifications, Pricing, Photos - Motor Trend

Nothing wrong with continuing to search for car either. Get some idea of what insurance will cost -- Amica have great rates, 100+ years of experience, and cover California cars http://brand.amicacoverage.com/ca?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=%2Bamica&utm_content=oqzrha4Z-dc|&utm_campaign=auto-d-brand-mbm-dm-california-publisher&pcrid=6758250791&keyword=%2Bamica&mm_campaign=D2474415E6B9A70FEC6184773B73E39C&pdv=c&mkwid=oqzrha4Z-dc|pcrid|6758250791&adgroup=generic get quotes form a couple of places maybe Geico too and one other.

Wow that was quick--congratulations! When do you pick it up?

I guess the Dealer was able to answer all of your questions about the car so you were comfortable about it and them. From everything I could find about that Dealer they are charge reasonable rates and really do well for their customers--many people had a lot of good things to say, among them trustworthy, great customer service and very attentive.

One customer said " This is the 2nd vehicle we've purchased now from Gennady and Roman at Exclusive Motors. They're attention to detail and customer service is the highest level and we would highly recommend them. They simply go above and beyond for their customers and won't sell you a vehicle unless it passes their quality performance testing"

Another customer said "I have never dealt with such honest "car people" before! Best place in California!"

Best of luck with the car!

Oh yeah!

What's amazing is the car was almost empty on gas. I used Unleaded 91(the most expensive) & the car was almost full with 6 gallons LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOOL Only cost me $28 :p

That's a good indicator of a bad fuel gauge. Look up the capacity of your gas tank, most sedans are around 18 gallons, not six, and keep an eye on how far you travel, in relation to the fuel gauge.

Good point InfinitusEquitas.

Fuel capacitiy of a Volvo S40 is 15.8 gallons---so 14-15 gallons fro almost empty to totally filled up.

If it was really almost empty and went to full on 6 gallons ---the sending unit/float or gauge should be checked----maybe go back to the Dealer and ask them about it--if it is typical/OK?
