I think the right decision was made, there was definitely some immaturity on this member's part and that combined with a minor I think we have to ban for liability reasons. (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, I don't know how likely or feasible a lawsuit like this is, but we really don't want to risk it) Just of note though, even though someone is banned they can still read all the main sections of the forum. They are not cut off from the wealth of info about lasers and safety we have compiled here, they just can't post.
Still kind of sucks, as many of us, myself included, started into this hobby when we were minors, and I'd hate to discourage someone from the laser hobby, but we have to protect the forum and the hobby itself.

Any teenager with just a little common sense will realize they can simply claim to be 18 or older and participate responsibly and if we are to accept someones " need to be honest about being underage " as a petition for a variance to the rule, then I would think their existing and continuing demonstration of responsible behavior would be prerequisite.

We can't feel bad about needing our members to demonstrate a basic level of understanding when it comes to laser safety, not a rigid protocol or anything extreme, just a basic understanding.

I'm old enough where this was never an issue for me. I remember when the first laser was made in 1960 and saw my first laser, a ruby one, in 1965. By the time I could get a laser I was a grown man and a college grad. I got my first laser in 1980. It was a HeNe 632.8 nm one.

It was a small one that I used for holography. It was the same one that came in Pioneer laser disc players. I don't remember the part number though.

Although I don't remember much about it there was a member who got his butt banned for being 11 years old with the nickname The Laser Man.
Recently made an account as The Laser Man 2. Being impossibly obvious it moved me to pity and I'm allowing his new account to stay and giving him a chance to prove himself.
I'll probably regret it but who knows...
This thread is to inform everyone about him and take in consideration what information you give.
If anyone has an objection towards this decision please tell me about it in here or in pm. We do have quite a few young members in here already and is probably why I wanted to be lenient in this particular matter.
Again please share your thoughts.

At the ripe old age of 8, I found electricity. An why yes I had almost killed myself numerous times by the time I reached 18. I also had a lot of fun and built a lot of cool things. An it all started because the socket came out of the wall, and I seen wires attached. Taught myself how to read a multimeter and use tools, in an era before the internet. Oh I miss books being a thing. Age is only a number, It's the monsters under the masks that matter.

When I was 21 I was a maint. man for a hotel. I had an assistant hired for me. No way vetted by me. Why I trusted the man I have no idea. I've never trusted anyone like that again. He had said he de-energized the system. I went behind this industrial drier. Mere inches of space, this thing was two stories tall and weight was in the tons, not to mention it had a concrete base. A whole row, with just enough space to squeeze between them to get to the electronics and access panels in the back. You climbed inside them to work on them if stuff needed changed out, except a relay box. You stood smashed against the wall struggling to breath, trying to access and check relays. That's where I was when I got hit with the hurt of my life. I believe it was 700v, was long ago. All I know is my fingers where I had slipped taking an Ohm reading, the tips were black and dead. I felt like I was ran over by a Mack truck. I couldn't think, I couldn't do anything but shake with the current. Finally my struggled yelling got idiot to hit the right breakers. I slopped to the side The best I could, feeling like I was dying, yep like I said a few times, lol. I fell to the floor, just lucky I wasn't dead. Ambulance came and got me. I spent a few days getting my bearings again. Really messed me up for a bit, hurt like hell too. Never again have I ever trusted anyone and anything dangerous in a work environment. Nope. Nope, Nope.

I thought of the exact same thing when reading @Commander J. Bloodmaker 's story. Somehow Baldwin managed to violate all four main rules of gun safety - at once - and still think he's not responsible.

Well, I have no point for telling you what's right or wrong on this forum. But I have seen idiots and geniuses among all ages. Being adult is no warranty to be responsible and being minor is no argument against responsible behavior.

In fact I have met quite a couple of minors that I trust more than most of the people ruling our world.

I try to judge people by their behavior rather than by their age. If someone turns out to be an idiot and unteachable - get em out despite of his age.

Btw. banning a specific user keeps him from posting. Nothing more. Neither is the "dangerous" information suddenly vanished nor poses that any restriction on getting parts, building lasers hurting himself - or maybe inventing a working fusion reactor. It's all about the possibility to talk to others.

And when I think of things that some governments do find either suitable or dangerous for minors, I tend to disagree on quite some of it.

If this poll is about how to keep the forum out of legal troubles, then there is just one solution. Do what is necessary to stay legal. Period. No poll needed. Even YouPorn Facebook asks a random visitor whether he "really and honestly" is an adult before entering the site, as otherwise he is doomed to turn into a salt pillar... which is obviously enough to obey the law. And that's a really dangerous site.

I'm on the younger side of legal aged. But I remember I got interested in lasers around 10 years old and dpss greens were already on the market. I didn't know s*** about the technical or even safety side of lasers (beyond power and wavelength) but I always had good intentions and knew to stay away from danger, so I only ordered 5-10mw units from reputable companies. I was never into anything really dangerous anyway though. I was more intrigued by the fact that they came in different wavelengths with different properties, looking at the beam, things like that. But there are so many loud voices on the internet that show off destroying things with >1W lasers all the time, I'm hardly surprised that so many kids come on here interested in them. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram are full of them
