Plotter for bga stencils ?

Hi,

I´am new to this forum.

I saw a video on youtube where someone hooked up a blu-ray diode to a plotter
to etch copperboards.

My Question:  Do have lasers, for instance from dvd-burners, enough power to cut through 1,5 - 3mm of plastic ?

My Idea is to use a plotter as a bga stencil cutter.

So, is it possible?

Ps. Already inserted links but I do not allowed to post them because of the 10post minimum restriction.

For the youtube video please search for "Laser-Photoplotter Platine"
An article about bga soldering can be found on sparkfun.com, search for "Solder Paste Stenciling"
A picture of the plotter as attachement

The blu rays we work with would do it....but slowly. you are going to be better off looking at IR fiber coupled lasers for this.

Out of intrest what plotter are you using and is it analogue or digital?  I ask as I am heading down the same route, once the project gets to the top of my to do list. ::)

[edit]Just an afterthought, the X6 and higher blu rays that others are playing with at the moment might work faster but they are very expensive at the moment.[/edit]

I can get an philips pm 8155 for real cheap.
By now, I don´t know if its an digital or analogue but the repeat accuracy of 0,1mm seems quite good to me.

First interesst was to check if power and accuracy of the laser is good enough to cut through plastic.

Will read a bit more about your mentioned IR fiber coupled lasers and talk to netzpfuscher.

I've got a couple 40 Watt IR fiber coupled laser diodes taht I want to turn into an egraver by using a plotter.
