Pico green laser module on eBay...anyone tried this?

In reference to the following ad:
DPSS pico-green laser module (MgO:PPLN + Nd:YVO4) 100mW, 200mW, 300mW, 500mW SHG (076783016996) | eBay

Has anyone here used one of these? If so, can you provide me with assistance in setting up my own? There is very little information on how to actually implement this device so I was hoping for some help. The price seems pretty good given a 3w 808 can be built fairly inexpensively. Just not sure on how to actually connect the two to make a working laser.

Is this the plastic one? i broke a dvdrw and found something like that in RED.. it worked but i couldnt find any module for it.. it was pretty much useless to me, so i wasted it!
 
is that the same one in th recent pico teardown if so things got it up and running ...

Definitely not that. This is a dpss crystal set, not a diode...

Not the same thing as the pico projector one either.

This is a high power crystal set. Looks pretty nice, relatively easy to use.
To make a working laser from this you will need a 3w 808 c-mount, focusing lenses, and various mounting plates and heatsinks.

It should be a lot easier to work with than other high power dpss systems since you only have to worry about alignment on one surface. According to their diagram you don't even need any pump focussing optics, you can just put it straight to the diode.
 
So basically what your saying is if I put a 3w 808 into a good host with a focusing apparatus I cal focus the beam and just place this module inline with the 808 output and I get about 500mw of green out the other side? Does this little device need heatsinking as well? Wil I have to focus the green output? Still would be cheaper I imagine to buy a 500mw green handheld but it would be cool to make my own...not sire of it's really worth the effort....
 
I wouldn't go for handheld. That would be far too hard to make.

Yes the output will need to be focused and yes the crystals have to be cooled.

Probably your best bet would be to get one of those broken 473 modules. It should have everything you will need to make those crystals into a working laser, including a 1.5w diode that should get you a good 250-300mw.
 
I've got one ordered. They're in Canada, so I should have it fairly soon - a week or so.

I'm going to use it in a dead 589 module from a 50mW PGL handheld. There's a great IR pump diode in that thing that still works. Also going to strip the black from the PGL host, and shine it to a mirror ;)

Will keep everyone updated.
 
It looks like you just pump in some 808 directly off the pump emitter. Now I wonder how well collimated the 532nm is?

What power of pump diode is in that 589?

I don't know what the dpss eficiency is for 589, but I'd imagine it must have to be at least a couple watts to produce 50mw of 589.

Not sure - I've been trying to figure that out. No luck so far. It's fine with 1.5A of current, so it must be at least 2W.

My real Q here is whether it can hit 3W, which is about the safest I think this Pico can handle.
 
The cristals look interesting but also to have less efficiency than the ones used in the 400 to 500mW handhelds. So compared to a handheld you can get for less than $200 the cristals are a bit overpriced. Plus they are also wanting $14 for shipping for such a small cristal. :eek:
 
I think that 500mW was just from having the diode butted up to the crystal set. You can probably improve efficiency by using proper optics on the pump side.

I wonder if these are the mystery crystal sets that are used in the new cheap high powered 532's we're seeing from o-like etc.

Be interested in seeing RHD's results.. I have one of the ebay 473 housings that's destined to be converted to 532 at some point.

One thing they don't mention though, is that I believe you'll still need a properly coated OC, and collimation optics.. Since this is just a crystal set after all.

I´m interested in his results too, but I doubt proper optics on the pump side can improve the efficiency. I´ve played a lot with IR diodes and cristals in the recent past and tried different setups to imprive the efficiency, but always got the best results by having the diode as close as possible to the cirstals without any kind of optics in between. There was always to much lost after the optics.

Well, this is not the the typical cristal setup and the results may be different, but compared to my 400mW greenie that is hitting 450mW by having the protection glas in front of it to make it waterproof, using a 2.5W IR diode and drawing just 1.7A the efficiency seems to be worse. It´s because I think it could hit 500mW by removing the glas and because there should be not that much difference between a 2.5W and a 3W diode.
 
Any one read this bit....

For example (see pic 2), when pumped with a 3W 808nm laser diode (with a fiber fast axis collimation) the output of 532nm green light of more than 500 mW can be easily achieved(see performance curve, pic 3)

I'm fairy certain that the IR diode I'm using (from a CNI unit) would have a fiber FAC.

And re optics, there must be a reason CNI uses optics before the crystals in their units. If it wasn't beneficial, they wouldn't do it.
