Hey Guys :)
Looking at building a 200mW - 800mW laser pointer.
Was going tho go with 532nm because the beam is most visible apparently but I have been told I should look at different wavelengths for a first DIY build, so what would be a good starting point, The main thing I want is the beam to be very visible at night. :thanks: in advance :)

Hello leumas :)

If you want a very visible beam then 532nm is your best bet, and at powers of about 200mW a beam will be easily seen.

Are you aware of laser safety as well?

DPSS builds are probably harder than diode since you have to take length of the module into consideration and then they are fragile with the crystals and what not ;)

Maybe try a 1 watt blue or a ~300mw red 650nm build? Those are both visible (esp the blue) and they are pretty easy.

I think KRNAZNBOY's suggestion is perfect.

Both models of these kind of lasers are not too expensive and will as he said, have a great beam during the night

I'd got for 1W of 445nm as well. 532nm builds are complicated and 520nm is still expensive at that power range. Red isn't very visible, but a 638nm diode driven to 800mW will be OK as well - if you don't mind the ugly beam.

That would be wonderful
So far ebay is the best I have found lol

Also would it be worth going with a more powerful diode, say 2w?

Well it depends on what you will be doing. The more powerful diode will only be worth it if you plan on doing "burning experiments" let's say.

About the laser:

You can check out the B/S/T section of LPF and see what kind of lasers are currently being sold that would fit you right(be aware you will need to be at least 18 and know laser safety)

If you want to buy brand new and have the money I would recommend this unit(Spartan Unit), these are great high quality lasers at a great price and will last you for years.

Thanks for the tips,
I don't want to burn stuff, I just want it to be ultra bright :D
I am not going to buy a pre-built laser, it's not just the product but the fun I will have making it :D
Can you buy diodes on the B/S/T or is that mainly pointers?
