anyone know of the ma the phr diode is run at in a sled, i only ask because whats stopping some one from using the power supply from the sled. probly pretty high quality driver and would save some soldering.
 





Sounds good in theory, But I'm rather confident that the driver is not actually on the sled, rather integrated into the main board of the disc drive itself.

I think that the driver may well be on the sled itself, Photonaholic. I have certainly seen this to be true on other sleds as I had a similar idea when I was learning. However, even if this were true, it won't be an avenue worth pursuing. All of the diodes we use here are over-driven by a good amount, (according to the manufacturers' figures at least!). For instance, if a diode is driven at 100mW pulsed output in the sled, (that is, for argument's sake, 50% duty cycle), then here it could well be driven at 100mW CW, (or Constant Wave). The drivers on the sleds themselves simply would not be able to achieve this. (Check out the part numbers on the components of the sled and I think you'll find the same.)

It's a nice idea, and I was disappointed too, but the best way forward is to build or buy a dedicated driver from here; and practice your soldering. ;)

Thanks, that was informative, I too figured that no matter what, the driver would be a much lower output than one could achieve by using a dedicated driver.

The best way to practice soldering is by joining wire scraps, that way you ruin nothing while learning.
 
No problemo...

I think soldering is a lot like handwriting. At first you can just about scrawl a single letter at a time but, after a while you'll be writing joined up and evryfink! When people can start to recognise a signature, then you know what you're doing. Practice makes perfect, as they say. Quality tools make a difference too. No need to go mad on expensive gear but just don't go for the cheapest.

makes sense, im pretty lousy at soldering although i did buy the cheapest soldering gun i could get and it seemed as though the tip was to large. anyone have some recommendations?
