If you know the distance that you're going to project towards is far enough away, those 532nm lasers often have enough divergence that they're a large dot by the time they hit the target, reducing the power density. At about 30ft the tiny 2mm beam had grown to a centimeter in diameter which represented about 1/6th the power density.

You could also fix multiple 5mW lasers together to form a cluster of dots. It'll create a bigger target to observe.

A 15mW 520nm/532nm laser such as the Nano or E2 works well to point things out no matter the surface color being pointed at or the ambient light. These have already been proven out many, many times in your occupation, rock quarries, general contractors, HVAC, strip mining, painting crews, surveyors and personally.
Just watch out for reflections and don't look at the dot for long periods of time if it closer than ~15 feet with a laser past 5mW.

None of you thought to wear transmit green, block red and blue glasses, and use a lower power laser? Ie glasses with a pass green filter.

These glasses are made for red lasers used in surveying, not sure about a source for 532...

Wouldnt all his students need to wear these glasses? Or am I wrong at what your advising.

Jeepers, please read the OP folks. In reality, no safety glasses needed. I am pretty sure this application is pointing out what limbs to cut off of a tree.
