Orange Lasers on discount!!!

hi everyone, Its good to see familiar names again :-)

I looked around a bit but couldn't find any straight up explanation of how orange color is produced exactly in pointer format. All I know is its DPSS.

So could it be that Dragon lasers simply pot moded it to sell 2-5mW CNI version, or it a straight up lie ?

cheers

According to DL -- It's not DPSS at all !!!! It is two IR lasers combined to mix into 593.5 nM. Pot mod which laser -- the 1064 or the 1342 ??
They don't say in the info I got from them that there's an MCA but it might be that the 1064 is from a 808 driven crystal.

What info do you have ?? I "almost" got an orange to review from them .

DL doesn't really understand it themselves I think (from past descriptions on their site).

593.5nm DPSS yellow-orange is created with Nd:YAG and KTP. When pumped by 808nm, Nd:YAG lases at 1064nm, but it can also lase at other levels to create wavelengths like 1342nm and 946nm (and what do you get when you double 946nm?  ;)). Anyway, the Nd:YAG is coated to maximize 1064nm and 1342nm output, and those two are passed into KTP where, instead of your standard frequency-doubling, they undergo "sum-frequency generation" to produce 593.5nm (1/[1/1064+1/1342]).

Until I see an independant review of a 2-5mW yellow pointer I will remain quite skeptical alongside Pseudo. Trust me, if CNI was sellling this thing we would have it already.

Cool, so I guess its us two against the rest of the forum ;)

lol the forum isnt against anyone that i believe its just that i said dont be to quick to judge. when people have had good service. please dont take as attack.

I can't believe that thay can pack all that into a pointer !! The Info I got a couple months ago says "micro diode technology". At that time, the 2 - 5 mW was $600. I was asked to buy it for that price so I could do a review - then send it back !!! I walked -- - - - - - - - - - - -

Speak bloody English will you LOL :D Instead of this lazy PINK LANGUAGE FROM MSN ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

YMMV - that puts it quite well!

My point is not that all DL lasers are underspec. My point is that not all DL lasers can possibly be in-spec (by the very construction of the lasers - not just by occasional mistakes). Therefore, YMMV and if you buy from them, don't be counting on getting what you paid for.
Carter I know what you think and I'm tired of you slagging Dragon for selling CNI's under spec or over spec.... So why don't you start you own company and be a millionaire to prove your worth!!! Until you have your own business with all the overheads etc you'll never know......... ;)

Sorry, its not worth my while to move out of the country so I can break the law en masse while scamming customers - not to mention I don't have the capital. I'll just continue buying a few here and there for the fun of it.

I know its hard as hell to run a company and it sucks to be criticized when you're putting so much work into it. However, I do not see why that means I should pat them on the back for scamming people.

I'm sorry if you're tired of me pointing out a fraud for what it is. I'm tired of it too (believe it or not), but I'm even more tired of it being defended.

Mike-- sorry but I don't have any info on those orange pointers. No claims- only speculations. I'm beginning to like them though :-)

Yeh, I remember the past description. Wasn't it THE first RG laser or something like that :o :-)

Thanks a lot for orange DPSS explanation. Is it then possible that DL moded little "orangies" to go over 2mW to call them 2-5mW? Moding something this delicate would seem insane and product would seem way more unstable than moded greenie.

The reason I'm asking is because in recent past we've all seen lots of that game form sellers with green lasers when they first came out.

thanks again

I can't say its impossible, but I think its highly unlikely. First off, I don't think DL even has the brains to mod them. More importantly though, stick a <2mW on a power meter and you'll see where I'm coming from. Its an extremely tricky DPSS process and the stability on these yellows is appaling. You think the stability on your green DPSS is bad? Well try a yellow pen that jumps back and forth from 0.3-2.5mW a few times a minute, and can even revert to just outputting green on temperature extremes or low batteries.

Not only would a pot mod to that power mean severly shortened life for the diode, but I don't think the crystals could even handle that amount of power. They barely seem able to handle their spec of 0.5-2mW from the start.

SenKat-- hey man, thanks.. its good here !! LC is boring to death now.

Exactly my thoughts after reading your DPSS explanation. So its either a DL lie- or they made a deal with CNI and secured the only pen sized 2-5mW orange resale deal, which is as likely as pot moding ;D

aahhh .. gotta love controversy

It's not really a scam since he just said it was <5mW. Anything from 0 to 4.9 is <5mW so even if the pointer produces 0.1mW it is technically correct. Don't expect much more than 2mW though, these yellow pointers are not very high powered. And the stated specs of 0.6-2.0mW are generally quite accurate.

On the other hand, for the price that was paid on that auction you could almost have bought a new one from Laserglow, with a warranty and tested output power.
