Does anyone know of a DVD drive form www.geeks.com that has a powerful open can diode? Computer Geeks is a mile from my house so it would be convenient. ::)

What model DVD burners have you had most success with?

Thanks guys

Yes, but not by much so it's unlikely that you'd be able to tell the difference by eye. To differentiate would require a laser power meter.

Ok I made a laser out of this exact DVD burner. It does have a very bright open can diode. Extracting it was kind of a pain. I have it running at about 410-440mA though a Rkcstr driver with 6v. I estimate it's putting out about >220mW. It burns everything! Lights matches faster than you could strike them! Melted through a chocolate bar in 10 seconds.

This produces a lot of heat and should be well heatsinked. Also the driver gets warm too running the diode at such a high current. So run times should be limited to around 30 seconds just to be safe. Unless you also have heatsinked the driver. All in all an awesome build. By far the most powerful red laser I've ever built. :)

Thanks Jonrobertd!

No problem man, from the reading I have done at 420ma we are getting closer to 300mw of power.
It does need good heat sinking at this level but with a 1 inch cube ALU heat sink I run mine for a few minutes with no problems (knock on wood).
If I should not do this someone please stop me!

Your probably right then I don't have a LPM I was just estimation the mW. I only have a Dark horse heatsink on it but I think that's good enough. 8-)

Yep your good on heat sinking, and where did you find the Coleman?
My Wal-Mart has a silver one that runs on 2 cr2 batteries and I am looking for that one.

Yeah Wal-Mart is where I got this one. You may be able to find it cheaper online though. I think I paid like $20 for it.

If you still need an LPM, check my laserbee exclusive LPF sales thread in the B/S/T section.
Make a quick decision, because the sale ends on Friday.

Why pay extra, I have the sled for $17.75 shipped. Long Open Cans in the 18x-22x burners are the same.

It looks like some material from Calculus 2. Good luck on that stuff man. It's supposedly the hardest of the calcs.
