Oculus Rift/HTC Vive / VR in general?

Personally I would go for the ASUS Stirx card, it just looks nice, and got two HDMI ports. And I got the Strix 970 and have no problems with it. Excellent cooler on it too.

I considered that one also, but the reviews are not quite as good. In my experience EVGA tends to be the best when it comes to support, drivers, and software, and MSI... well, I probably just got lucky, but I remember being able to OC my GTX460 a lot.

I'll probably grab the first one that I can. https://www.nowinstock.net/computers/videocards/nvidia/gtx1080/

Can't believe that more than two months after release there's still a shortage on them. The 1070's are mostly in stock. For VR purposes alone, that would be my choice, but I'm dead set on having a 40" 4k tv as main monitor.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080: This ferocious graphics card pulled us even further into VR

For you, the 1080ti down the road will probably be a great option.

I think the EVGA card is a great choice too. Just wished to speak of my positive experience with my current card.
I guess I have to wait for 1080ti... The 970 is a good card, but also just the minimum for VR, and I do notice its limits in certain games.
But upgrading now feels too soon for me.. But whenever I upgrade it will have to be the whole system, because my CPU is already the weakest point.
I hope to stretch it out a year if I can, that should be fine as long as devs remember that the 970 is the minimum.

I very highly doubt they will move away from the 970 as the minimum anytime soon, but you will probably need to dial back settings in some games. Since focus shifted so much from cpu to gpu, I won't be upgrading my whole system for at least 2 more years (i4790), and hopefully the 1080 will last through that time well enough.

One thing I definitely look forward to is reinstalling skyrim and going nuts with mods :D

I just wish that all devs could use the exact same engine that Valve used with The Lab. That game not only looks incredibly good, but also runs extremely well. It automatically changes the detail on the fly by analyzing how many frames the GPU can reach, so the better GPU you got, the higher the detail. But it already looks better than any other game I've tried so far with my 970. The only time it drops any frames is in the Robot Repair demo, when Glados shows up.

Would be great, but never going to happen. Games will continue to be optimized as best as possible for both amd and nvidia, but will run best on one and not the other.

Picked up the 1080 about an hour ago from a local store ($20 more vs online price, but I have it in hand :D). This exact version: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 DirectX 12 08G-P4-6286-KR 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5X PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support FTW GAMING ACX 3.0 Graphics Card - Newegg.com

Next purchase is going to be vive or vizio D40u-D1 tv, for use as monitor.

Edit: How often do you find yourself using the Vive now that you had it for a while? Still mostly standing, or more sitting down? (Now that I have the card, I'm again agonizing over whether to go for the vive, or rift, even though imo the vive is the better choice right now.)

vive or tv

lol

I use the Vive a lot, and almost exclusively standing. The only thing I use whilst sitting is virtual desktop, or then playing my standard 2d games on steam on the Vive.
The first days gave me a lot of ache in my feet and legs, and the first two weeks made me feel pretty weird in general, such as seeing the chaperone bounds around me, even when not using VR. But now it is all second nature to me.

Most of all I recommend actually trying Vive, or Rift at the store and see if its worth it. I sold my TV.

That is quite a bit more of a reaction than I was expecting!

I'm definitely getting both a vr headset and monitor, it's mostly a question of time.

Just spent a bit of time measuring and I can free up a little over 6 feet (1.8) by 10 feet (3m) without having to move things around too much in my living room. Can probably free up even more space but that would require completely rearranging things and leave my tv at a less then optimum distance, and mess up the surround sound positioning too. Can't have everything :p

No VR headset out there is good enough to replace a monitor due to the resolution, but since you got the 1080, you can turn up supersampling quite bit, which I've heard increase the clarity noticeably.

The card is HUGE. I had to bend away part of the case in order to allow one of the 8 pin power connectors access. Completely blows away all games I have in 1080p.

Also couldn't manage to actually install new PSU, was too big, so now it's just sitting on top of the case. Not pretty but it works.

Make sure to check in Nvidia Control Panel > Video > Adjust video colour settings > Advanced, and see if it is set to full dynamic range Full (0-255).
On the 900-series it defaults to Limited after each update (super annoying), and it makes black colours look gray when watching movies.

So I just ordered the 40" 4k tv I wanted (Vizio d40u-d1), and will probably pick up the vive this weekend :D

Nothing I can do about the vive price, but at least the monitor upgrade is going to end up running me only $300 or so, which is acceptable.

In recent news, oculus is releasing an update to provide support for up to four base stations, and roomscale vr shortly. Of course the controllers won't be out for a while still.

Regarding the 1080, performance has been flawless so far. Most demanding game I have is skyrim, and topping it off with ~100 mods I noticed zero issues. Waiting on a sale for fallout 4 or GTA.

GTA 5 is a lot of fun. So much to do, and I've not even finished the story in over a year (I'm a very casual player). Also the Vive became a distraction, but I really should get back to it. I've seen a VR mod for GTA 5, but I wont even try it with a 970.

Lots of VR related news today. Picture and part number leak for new model of the Samsung Gear, Fove VR also showing off a new design, and the most interesting is Playstation VR room requirements, which are actually greater than Vive's.

Most importantly though, there will be a Steam VR games sale this weekend.

I already emptied my wallet on the summer sale... One thing I hate about VR is how expensive it is.
