Question:

If you're planning to build a laser pointer, is there any reason to buy the whole sled instead of just the diode?

Some people can make use of the optics that come with a sled (Beam splitters, lenses, mirrors, ect). Additionally, many blu-ray sleds also come with a red diode that can be extracted and used. However, if you are just planning on building pointer, all you need from the sled is the diode.

Personally I like buying sleds so I can extract the diode myself. I gain experience working with LD's and I feel more accomplished when I finish my project. Besides, it's usually cheaper (though not always) to buy sleds than pre-extracted diodes.
