I'm sure they will love the part when you were burning the battery charger, then when you return the laser they will see the charger with burn marks.

I would guess from videos it was left on too long
o-like lasers are cheap lasers, so a typical duty of 1 minute on, 2 mins off should be respected

Sorry to hear that. I guess what is discussed is the Mitsubishi LPC826/836 650nm diode whose secure power is 130mw. Sure it can be pushed to 200mw or 230mw or higher but it will short the diode life very often. We burnt some already with the similar attempt in the lab. 100-130mW might be more worryless. Sure i might also be wrong 
Ask for a refund or replacement and they might not refuse it if you didnot reverse the battery polarity or something - this can be detected if you did. Good luck.
