I've worked with a 5W 532nm Spectra Physics laser without the laser safety eyewear for it. The laser was stable mounted on the table and the beam path shielded. Aligning a laser, moving it around, placing things in the beam or starting it up in an unkown situation are all unpredictable situations, some of which can occur accidentally. That does require goggles.
So be carefull and not only consider than it goes right but also what can go wrong. Pointers are much more unstable than lab lasers, so be carefull.
I recommend goggles for setting it up and that kind of things, admiring the beam in a stable situation is no problem, I do that myself too.
