ok i have a 16x burner diode from darklasers that i want to know if i can drive it a bit higher with no heatsink, and still get a decent life out of it, its currently running at 300mA and id like to go to 350 or 375 but i dont know if i should considering it has nothing but an axiz module to cool it, btw its hardly ever on for longer then 20 seconds

thanks

I was wondering if I could run my car at a higher speed if I removed the Radiator
and will it still run for 200k miles...

Ah well, dont bunk it right away. 20 seconds is about th timeframe that would heat up such a module to unacceptable levels. For short duration experiments heatsinking could be good enough, but there is little substitute for proper heatsinking that can hanlde 100% duty cycle on a warm day ;)

well i mean ive heard people say they run theirs at 420mA with no problems, and i mean i use mine for short durations and the module doesnt even get warm from where i can tell, im just wondering if anyone else has tried a higher power level with no heatsink, and what their results were

also what if i put one into the red laser module from laser surplus parts, with the small heatsink (cant get a link to work)

That's me. I run it at 420mA with nothing but an Aixiz (which is held inside the flashlight host with strips of paper :shhh: ). It takes a minute or so before it becomes unacceptably hot. No problem at all if you just want to point at stars or distant walls a bit. Generally of course I try to let the module housing become no more than warm. Also, with "Aixiz module" I mean the whole thing: head and body, screwed tightly together to increase the thermal mass.

Actually, as also reported, I've been running the LPC-815 at 620mA accidentally in this config for a few minutes (here it heats up within 15 seconds or so), but it's still alive and fine.

Since others have reported similar currents, I suspect the LPC-815 is quite a bit tougher than people think.

Don't listen to people who want to make believe that running a LED (including an LD) requires super-duper-complex setups.

that doesnt exactly answer my question, like i said im running my 16x from darklasers @ 300mA and it doesnt even get warm after being on for over a minute, so i wanted to know if i can push the diode a bit higher at maybe 350-375mA for a better output

I run my phr 803T for less than 10 seconds without a heatsink @ a power of 90 mW. It's still alive after 7 months or so.
