No, I didn't use a Telescope.

Reminds me of being in the middle of the ocean during my Navy years. Hard to explain to someone just how much you see in the right conditions.
Very nice shot and quite the rig.

Oh how I'd love to see the night sky from dark locations out at sea.
Thanks glad you liked the pics pman.

G'day Andrew. A nice photo and a very nice Scope and mount setup you have there. I do have to say that you have inspired all of us here who would like to maybe get ito a bit of astrophotography. But at 6.5k for just that mount alone it may be just a tiny bit much for some!? Most of us could come up with the 20mw green pointer though! :D
Do you have any thoughts on the various Astro type mounts that are made for cameras and may be a bit more affordable.?

Ah yes indeed, please don't think you need a high end mount like this to take photos like this.
It is overkill, it's like powering a AA battery powered pen laser from a Lab bench supply !
No I just used this setup because I already had set up the mount while doing other 'deeper' astro imaging.
I just wanted to show what a DSLR and prime lens is capable of.

This is not to say that astrophotography is a cheap hobby but you can get into it relatively cheaply and see if you like to go further.

It's like lasers, I started with a pen laser but ..... well you know...

Anyway a basic mount will get you started with a DSLR, a mount like an EQ3 or an EQ5, available from Bintel in Australia, they are a good dealer (I'm not affiliated with them).
Have a look at the mount section for an equotorial mount.
There are other dealers too.
Another basic starter option is a Vixen Polarie star tracker or an iOptron SkyTracker.

Ofcourse everyone starts out doing some moon shots or star trails.
Star Trails are fun and inexpensive and done by just using a stationary tripod pointing to the celestial pole and a long exposure taken to reveal the earth's rotation.

I'm glad that people get inspired by the pics, don't be put off by expensive gear.
Go along to a local viewing night and see what others are doing.

Astronomy and lasers go hand in hand (so to speak) so have fun.

shared this on another forum where they are doing astro photos.

They posted this link for sky photography Dynamic Perception
Great thanks for that and for the info on Dynamic Perception.
Could you post the link to where you shared the pic?
I'd love to have a look.

I have no idea how to post it direct in the thread but it's link is here in the random picture thread, they were posting astro stuff so I did.

Daily random pictures you have taken... - Page 537 - FerrariChat.com

The photos just above the post I made with your picture "Isaac Ireland post #10727" is a very good friend of mine who is a photographer and I was sharing your picture with him. I linked your explanation to them also I liked it so much.
