I just got my True 30mW from DX...
and you can barely, just barely see the beam.
I think my Dilda's beam is as visible as the True's beam.
Is this right or did I get a defective/underpowered unit?

And I'm talking about a dark room.
In a room with light from a window, you can't see the beam at all.

Try the beam outside at night, the dot can bee bright enough to screw up your night vision and make the beam appear dimmer. Are the dots about the same brightness?

You might want to check out this video I made, I compare a really good True 30 to the DX 200 red.

Does the unit dim when you first turn it on?
Also, be sure to keep it cooled to a reasonable level, overheating will cause a drastic drop in power.

It definitley seems to be very underpowered. The beam of my 5mw from DX can easily be seen in a pretty dark room, and is much more visible than my 250mw red MXDL.
This is the bad about DX: they sell pretty good lasers for amazing prices, but it is common to get a defective unit. Their absolutley best laser seems to be their dilda-lazor (200mw red), it's really popular. I will have to get one myself before it will get discontinued or the price will be raised. :)

The true 30 is also one of their most reliable greenies, so you were very unlucky to get a bad one.

Yeah. The driver and IR diode are bad. Thats why they are so cheap. Those two parts come from china.
Anyhow. I'm looking for a broken laser I can rip open. And take out the part that has the crystals in it. I just don't have the hart to slaughter a new working laser. PM me if you would like to sell it to me.

Thanks,

Nearly ALL lasers come from China. CNIs (Nova/LaserGlow), Optotronics, and nearly all laser diodes are made in China, and those companies sure sell good lasers.

In all truth, you can't tell the power of a laser by the brightness of the beam. MANY factors will determine how bright a laser's beam is, so the only way to see if the laser is underpowered is to meter it.

I know their good lasers. And for the price... You can even put a better IR diode, and one of our drivers in it. And still save money.

But China is a big country. There are many sides to it. The ones that pay a decant salary to their employees. And the ones that pay $0.05 an hour.

guess I have to RMA it... :(
isnt brightness subjective though? I mean I don't have a power meter, so I can't actually say it's underpowered.. im just worried I RMA it and they say, no "brightness" isnt grounds for returns or something

Yeah, In my room I can see the beam of my romisen and its probably doing <25mW ( not using 3.6V bats, makes the output a little lower ) but I find its easiest to see the beam if you point it over your head looking towards the aperture ( away from your eyes , Duh.) or when you shine it on a black surface the dot isn't as bright so its easier to see the beam.

before i do RMA it... how visible is the beam?
outside at night I can see the beam when I'm looking with it's direction... (like Diachi's "over the head")
if I look really hard I can probably see it slightly from the side too..
but this is almost the same as my dilda, which i expected to be like this.

Day time, no chance in hell I can see the beam.

does this agree or disagree with the units you guys have?

LOL while taking pictures I think I caught my dilda mode hopping

30mW? At night you should be able to see the beam from the side. Sounds like you need to RMA it alright :)

As for dilda mode hopping, that's impossible. Mode hopping is something that happens to DPSS lasers (like greenies and blues), the dilda is a straight diode laser and won't do that.

Thats not what the pics suggest :o

Anyway, I would RMA it, I can see the beam from my romisen even in a lit room. granted my room = very dusty. At night I can see it amazingly.

ur "true 30"= fail mine was visible in broad daylight in the shadows. then i tried to pot mod it and ripped the diode pins.

yours is definatly a fail try to rma using the dim thing if that doesn't work sabotage it if u wanna risk it
