Hey everybody i figured id finally get around to sharing my Nintendo Zapper Laser Gun. (video at the bottom)

I started off with one of these [URL="http://rayfoss.com/productn.asp?ArticleID=76"]rayfoss lasers
I bought this because it looked sweet and doubled as a flash light. But you get what you pay for the flash light part broke but the laser setup worked. One day i was cleaning my attic out and i came across my old NES and it had 3 Zapper guns, so naturally i thought how can i modify this to make it better.....I know put a laser in it! So i opened up the Zapper, gutted it. Then the rayfoss laser and to my surprise i only had to dremel out two small pieces of plastic to get the laser module in and a small piece to make room for the batteries. Next i wanted to try to keep the gun looking and sounding as original as i could so i wired the trigger, which makes the classic NES mechanical gun noise as the switch. Now if you pull the trigger all the way down youll get a fast on/off with a great sound but you can also hold the trigger down just a little bit to keep the laser on.

The batteries-

The rayfoss runs off of 4.5V and it came with a 3 AAA holder but that wont fit in the ZAPPER so i know a little trick when it comes to 9Vs. if you take and open them up theres 6 AAA batteries inside so i just cut off 3 of the AAAs and left them in there to give the gun some weight.

the final product.
for some reason i cant figure out how to embed the video from flickr on this post so heres the link for the video....

Whats next?

I want to put an on/off switch at the bottom of the grip so there are no accidental shooting. Also i am trying to find some small audio recorder or something so i can put a Storm-Trooper Blaster sound on it and then put that and a little speaker inside the gun so every time i pull the trigger "Pew" "Pew" "Pew" lol. And the biggest thing is the batteries id like to find a single battery that i can run this off of, maybe a rechargeable one and i can put the charger inside the gun so i dont have to open it up every time it needs a charge.....idk just some thoughts i had floating around

I know this isnt some amazingly cool complex project but theres nothing i love more than lasers and Nintendo and combining them.... :)

Ah, the nostalgia!
I love your project.
Whats next?
Get rid of those crappy batteries and use a single Li-Ion cell, that gives you ~4V,
which should be enough to drive the module.

Li-Ions come in all shapes and sizes so just use the biggest one you can fit.
AAA size=10440
AA size=14500
16340
18650

these numbers mean:
1st & 2nd digits = diameter in mm
3rd & 4th digit = length in mm

Or even use a cell phone battery.

yea i know batteries are the next thing im doing for sure. im snowed in today so some research is in order and i hope to be ordering some today...YAY!

and i can put the charger inside the gun
You could, more simply, install a little power plug wired to the battery holder inside the gun,
and then make an adapter that goes inside your battery charger and connects to the plug in the gun. ;)

Wow, what a simple idea to add a plug, wish I had thought of that when I built mine. I hated the thought of opening it every time I needed to get to the battery. So I dug around my surplus parts and found an old R/C hover toy that had lost its foam ring and took the socket from it and searched my 30+ wall wart collection for a tip to fit. Once I found the match I did a little a work and I can now charge the RCR123 without taking it apart. And you have to love that flexible FP wire for those tight spots. Here's a few pics of the setup. Thanks, Anselm for the idea. +1

I upgraded mine last night, took the original cord that comes out of the gun to hook it up to the NES and I soldiered that to the battery holder of the rechargeable battery but a little connector on the end of it and cola rechargeable laser gun!

Well I sure am glad I could help you guys, and I'm kinda proud you actually made it happen.:)

Nice projects :gj: Just keep them out of childs hands cause they wouldn't know that they realy are.:)

I need to dig up thre 2 or 3 of these i have and put a different nm in each one. Mine all came from thrift shops f0r about a dollar each.

nice thread and T Y to all who added advice.

i put a master on/off switch so if some one just picks it up and pulls the trigger itll just make the sound and not lase.

i forgot to say thanks for the ideas on how to improve my Zapper gun. it came out better than i could have hoped! now all i have to do is find 2 more on ebay so i can stick a 445 in one and a Red in the other

I will deffinately DEFFINATELY be making me one of these...

this is an awsome build and a great idea. thanks so much.

ill replace the cord with a charger port sothat when its plugged in itll look like its got the standard cord.
adding the on off switch is an awsome idea aswell. and shouldnt be hard to do.

thanks again man, great work

Imagine going to a cos con dressed as the duck hunter with one of these babies ;)

thanks guys im glad people are still checking this thing out! the on/off switch is a MUST because sometimes its fun to just shoot people and not blind them lol....but seriously a safety switch on a gun is always a good thing.

whats funny is i was showing my friends dad this and he loved it so much that he wants me to build him a set of 3 matching "Ray Guns" (red, blue, and green laser)! I love getting paid to build cool things!
