Hello Laser Forum. I'm really glad I found this place. Looks like there is loads of good information to take in.

I recently purchased one of these:
3W SUPER BAD Blue laser

I attached a picture of what the 3 watt laser looks like pointed at tile floor from about 4 feet away. I broke something. I'm clueless what happened. Below is what I did.

I've had a little fun with the laser straight out of the package. Included in the package was a different lens that I believe is adjustable on the focus. So I removed the brass fitting with the lens in it, then installed the new lens ring with adjustable lens in it. I'm saying adjustable (not sure if my lingo is correct) because I can change the height of the lens by turning lens ring.

Anyhow, when i put the adjustable lens on, I pointed the laser at a wall about 15 ft away and the focused laser was a rectangle 1 foot tall by about 2 feet wide. Turning the lens ring did nothing.

I put the original back in. I tightened it by hand til it bottomed out (by hand). I put the lens ring back on the fixed lens and now it's not right.

I have no idea what I did. I've still got a major learning curve to get over, but if I can get some parts on order, that would be great.

Any help, advice or suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.

Brian

I am not sure, but it looks like you screwed down the lens too far and broke the diode window? That output is so dirty i think the diode is dead :(

Anyone else?

Looks like the lens is out of focus and very dirty. You'll just have to tinker with the lens until you fix it. More pics will help us help you.

I took the lens back out this morning and cleaned both sides with q-tip and alcohol before taking that pic. I waited a good 5 mins before putting the lens back in and trying it again. After that attempt, that's when I took the picture I attached.

The lens in the pic that is installed is the one that came installed on the module. When i put it in this morning, i tightened it by hand down to where it was snug.

Can someone explain to me what the difference in lenses are? What are the pros/cons of the lens in the copper piece with detached lens wheel versus the lens with the lens wheel attached. Yes, I'm very new. But it's something new to be interested in and I'm an engineer by trade, so this is all cool to me.

Thanks for the info.

What could I take more pics of to help out? I have a very nice camera that can take some awesome macro pics - - if that helps.

Greetings,

Those builds are the same Rick Trent used to sell, if you bought what was shown in the pic for the laser, and sounds like your lens may not be in properly. If the lens did get messed up, then you should be able to get a replacement for it.
Make sure the lens is screwed completely into the focus adapter, and you should not need to tighten it all the way as it will be out of focus. Likely one is a 3 element glass lens, and the other a high power glass G2 type lens.
Tighten them into the focus adapter first, then put it back on the laser and when almost all the way down, turn laser on so you can focus it.

Hope that helps you.

Moe

I found Rick Trent's number and gave him a call. Come to find out, he's the one who built my laser. I'm going to try adjusting the height of the lenses when I get home. If that won't do it, I'm going to send the module back to him to repair.

I'm an aerospace engineer. I'm the lead engineer in our division of the company. Ducommun.... Ever heard of it? Based originally out of Carson, CA - Used to do mostly aero structures, but now venturing out. I'm within the interconnect solutions - In other words, we build some high end cables for government programs and supplier to the government. I have been over the fuel tank cables on the Lockheed F35 ever since it went into production (low rate back in 2006). We also build alot of engine cables for General Electric Engines used on the T700 engine. It's hard to explain, but the end products always change and it's interesting.

Greetings,

Glad to hear you were able to get up with Rick on it. He does normally stand behind his builds and kits.
As long as the diode window is not damaged I would think if need be just replacing the lens would take care of it.
If you do have to, Rick will take care of it for you as I had a issue with one I got from him a few years ago. He fixed it and only cost me postage sending it.

cheers,
Moe

the name of this thread kinda made my heart flutter a bit. I thought, Oh no, a NEWBIE with 3W!!!

that site, mmmmm, doesnt seem cool to me, check out the image of the guy lighting a cig pointing a yellow laser towards his face with what appear to be regular sunglasses

How about a raw diode output picture? Then we can rule out diode failure?

That would be good :)

Thanks

My thoughts exactly...

And that site looks sketchy to me.
The name and logo gives me a bad feeling.
