You need alkaline batteries. Heavy duty batteries are crap for this application. From my experience owning a LOT of 532nm units you are likely drawing closer to 400mA as I would expect that laser to be over spec.
Every laser I own of theirs is over spec and will output more with more voltage. Personally I would recommend lithium AAA but they are expensive although you can get a decent deal on them on Ebay. The main difference I've seen between advanced and ultimate lithium are the ultimates start at a higher voltage. The batteries used in these make a HUGE difference in output.
