New dx red 200mW....dead in a day!

This happened to my first dilda from O-like and they replaced it. It seems that sometimes you get a defective diode ;)

I don't think the batteries have nothing to do with it's dead, just pure casualty. I use 3.6V CR2 that charge to 4.2V to boost the power and it's burning like the first day. An user here powered it at 12V to get 330mW for some seconds and it didn't die. Your batteries haven't killed it :D

Hmmm haha I do hope DX is on par with O like! (: If not I am seriously screwed.

A defective diode makes a defective dilda, & that is really no fun... :yabbmad:

I'd say it was just a defective diode/laser.

It is possible your rechargeable batteries gave it a little more juice than the regular ones did, but generally these 'dilda' type lasers are quite tolerant of higher supply voltages. Many people operate it from two 3.6 volt CR2 cells with no ill effect.

It is possible for a diode to work for a short period of time and then suddenly die. For example, there can be a small defect in one of the reflective facets, which grows bigger under the optical stress of the diode lasing. At a sudden point this becomes critical and the whole facet fails, leaving you with basically a weak LED.

Sooo.... Is it safe to say that IF DX doesn't need me to ship the dead one back, I still can salvage the driver board, and that by switching the diode I'd have a working laser already?! Sexciting prospects!

Ok back to the serious stuffs, if so, do you guys know anyone who sells laser diodes and ships worldwide?? Plus what are the diodes that the current board can drive... I may just be plain dreaming but it doesn't hurt :P :thanks:

The same thing just happened to me today I woke up put the batteries in turned it on then it was a dim red and I was like wtf. My laser was 3 months old but it should be able to last for more than a year. I didn't even go over 1 minute before I cooled it off. This really makes me mad that I spent money on something and it dies so quickly. :(

My first dilda died about a year after i got it.
@ the thread starter::: I used (and still use) the same batts and charger you have in my new red.

It's been 4 days now, and DX hasn't give me an official reply... this is getting tiresome.

oh yes, DX customer service IS SLOOOOOOW as a snail.

They WILL request you to send it back.

Actually, I had a DOA battery charger from them a while back -- they asked me to upload a picture of the charging LEDs not lighting. I did so, they said "keep it, we'll send another one" -- they did.

This was a few years back though.

I agree with the above post about the batts. I use 3.6V all the time in my Dilda, with no problems.
I also use 3.6V 10440 + dummy cell in the AAA 532nm and 405nm pointers. No problems so far.
I measure the power using the 3.6V's, if it raises the mW's I'll use them, if not, there's no point. Some drivers will just generate more heat @3.6V=not good. Some drivers I have seen a +40mW difference.=good.
I am sure it is shortening the diodes life but it only costs $10 to replace one (650nm) and most of my 532nm pointers I use the 3.6V's in, I bought for 1¢, so :wtf:

Haha FINALLY got a word from them back.... The email correspondent (Amelia) told me to look around for answers in forums (which I did way before she told me to). Ultimately I replied, that I have done ALL that I could to get it up and running but it ain't working, so is requesting them to send me a replacement.. Sloooooow like eff man....
