Hey Build -

I've given all the input I can give without ending the competition early ! If I told you what I did and did not like, how would that be fair to the others ? I'm fairly certain I told you that previously when you PM'd me with your banner creation. I will judge the banners when the contest comes to an end, not before - sorry.

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

I agree. How this usually works is you send in a number of raw examples. Then if one is chosen at THE END you go on to the tweak stage. You dont need to send complete finished designs, just a quality idea. The more ideas the better. This stops you from wasting time submitting a complete idea that is not going to be chosen. and gives you more chances at being chosen.

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

I had some more time on my hands so I decided to make a second one, but I can only submit one, that's why I asked.

And that banner is not really complete.

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

We can submit more than one can't we? Meh I put together a few more for you in a different more simplistic style, if it gets picked I can add some animation if you want as well.

You can submit as many as you like - I don't recall saying only one entry... but if I did, NO ! Submit as many as you like ! :)

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

I made these two. If you want I can animate them.

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

Hey there - I'm a complete newbie to this forum, but I happen to be a semi-professional graphic designer and I'd be excited for a chance to win something and help out a fellow forum member - problem is I'd really have no idea what to do with the prize, as I'm really really (emphasis on really) new to lasers. Any chance that the prize could be changed to something that's already finished or at least include DIY instructions? Also - I prefer not to work entirely on spec - I think it comes out better for both the client and the designer if there's mutual collaboration. To that effect, would you be interested in PMing me your AIM or email so we can chat about what you're looking for in a banner? Let me know if this is outside contest rules - otherwise I'm looking forward to putting something together ;).

*edit*

Also noticed that in your original post you mentioned something about clashing with the colors of your site - are you planning to use the banner there or as an advertisement here? If it's over there, what would the size of the banner be? I'd also be curious to know your site colors.

*edit again*

Since I couldn't fall asleep, I decided to work on a preliminary banner:

stonetekbanner.png

The text in the middle can, of course be replaced. I could also do some mild animations, but I'd prefer not to as leaving the banner in PNG or JPG form will look much better than a GIF due to dithering. The laser is taken from a stock I found online, the logo was created with some text and some vector work, and the background was done through some abstract brushing - so no worries about any sort of copyright and distribution issues. I'm not sure if this is the style you're going for - I can go for more professional or more artsy, and even make the thing look like a web 2.0 logo with some vector art, so it's really based upon what you're looking for. Also I'd be very open to any comments and criticism from other people on this forum - always looking to improve!

Offtopic: if it looks a bit futuristic, it's because I was listening to this happy hardcore song on repeat while working on it - it's amazing!

That banner looks very good, man. But I suggest you change the lasers in the picture since they're (I think) from LaserGlow and I believe you can't use those images for commercial purposes without authorization.

SenKat, sorry for the delay, I'll be submitting my banner most probably next week... damn exams :(

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

Ah - didn't think about the lasers themselves - I just know that they were a stock taken by someone else. Do you know about the rules governing that? Usually fair use permits the use of stock photography even if the subject is copyrighted, but I suppose I could alter the lasers themselves to look different.

*edit*

I suppose I could remove the lasers themselves entirely or just have the beams emanating from the corner without the physical lasers being there. SenKat, would you prefer to keep them or have just the beams or have nothing there?

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

No worries, Niko ! The contest ends in just a little bit over a week from now (WOW time has zipped by !) so work hard, and get those submissions in !!!

To Dopamine : I cannot give one on one discussions about the banners - to you, and the rest wondering, if I select a banner that you have designed, THEN I will go over the design with you, and discuss how to perfect it, change items, etc - the one MAJOR rule is this : absolutely NO copyrighted materials may be used in the creation of your banners. Also, Dopamine, ANY lit, or item awarded will come with links at the very least to instructions on how to assemble the items. In the case of the Kryton, Kenom (The esteemed originator of the Kryton series) has put together an extremely in depth tutorial on how to assemble the various parts, as well as how to configure, etc - so don't worry.....there is a TON of support on this forum for any type of kit I might sell - I don't have "original" kits on my site (with the exception of the Dorcy, as I was first out of the breach with making a laser out of them, WOOT) as I have very little imagination (hehehehehe) and prefer to purchase from other forum members, and showcase their products on my site.

PLEASE REMEMBER, FOLKS - if you have seen the lasers, pictures of components, etc = somewhere, or have seen the beam shots somewhere, or the background somewhere (get the idea ?) then you CANNOT USE IT FOR A BANNER FOR ME, PERIOD. ANY COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL WILL BE DELETED AND DISQUALIFIED WITH EXTREME PREDJUDICE. Stuff like that is what has lead me to my current dilemna - my current logo uses a copyrighted picture in the background, and the individual that created it would be in serious hot water if I released his info to the company that is all over my ass to get it changed. Yup, ignorance is NO EXCUSE ! I have violated copyright laws with my logo, but I did receive one consolation - I have to have the picture removed by the end of november, as I pleaded my case, stating that I was unaware of the violation, and I did not argue with them, and was as cooperative as possible. AFTER everything is done (they do NOT know this !) I am sending a small "Gift Pack" as a thankyou to them - to anyone who has ever received a gift pack from me, you know they will like it, as I am seldom - if ever stingy :P

To the ENTIRE forum - Thanks for working so hard on your submissions, I see some excellent banners, and it is going to be tough as hell to select just THREE winners ! Yeah - I've FINALLY decided, there will be THREE WINNERS in this contest - for second and third place, I have not selected prize packs as of yet, but it will be generous, and similar to the first place prize.

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

Alright - thanks for the heads up! So no chance of you having any stocks for us to work with? In that case I'll have to rearrange things a bit I suppose. It's really too bad about not being able to consult one-on-one, but is there any chance we can get more general guidance about what you're looking for out of a logo/banner and what values you're trying to represent for your company? Even a catchphrase or motto would help give us a better idea of what you're looking for. Also - again, I'd be happy to do some animating if it is really important to you, but I think a still png or jpg really would be better for load times and for clarity - I know I always get really turned off whenever I see a .gif file because of the limited color space and the noticeable dithering. Please let us know at least how important it is that the image be animated?

Thanks and I'll be sure to try a few more arrangements!

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

We can use images form your site correct?

And I made this one

And this

And to dopamine. If you didn't want to use a gif you could use flash. Thats what I use because I hate gifs.

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

Hmm...I suppose so. Do the banners on this site support flash? They seem to ALL be .gif files. Yeah I've always also associated .gifs with sketchier popunder ads or other annoying things - you see them all the time off to the side but I tend to just filter them out now.

Re: New Banner for Stonetek !

I think it probably could but you would have to ask the admin or someone like that.
