Need help removing Diode

Pics below:  stupid LG 20X dvdRW from sams club has some heavy duty glue holding the diode in place, anyone have any advice on how to remove it safely? it's open can too, which makes things harder!

nevermind, i finally scraped all the glue away with a pocket knife, then used a safety pin to wedge into one of the indentions on the diode to slowly slowly pull it out...

my fingers are crampin.

lol, i was going to, but thats how i broke my last diode, screwing around with it without a housing, my axiz housings are at the post office (missed the package saurday, it's been killin me!!!!)

so I decided to be patient and wait till 10.30 to get the stuff properly hooked up first

VERY GOOD IDEA!!!! I don't know how many times I've seen folks kill a diode from impatience. It's nice to see some folks actually have a modicum of self control on this forum!

Nice to see what the LG open can looks like. It looks fairly easy to remove. Maybe I will give that drive a try next time..

If a diode won't come out easy, can I use my dremel to cut around it?

i use my dremel to remove about everything from anywhere.. well, if i need it alive after extraction anyway.. hehe

seriously, a dremel is a great tool. if its closed-can, no prob. for open can, watch out for dust on the chip. if the cuttingwheel turns into the right direction, the dust should stay away from the inner parts of the diode.
oh, be careful with heat. i have to stop after a second and let the thing cool, but you'll find that out if you hold it with bare fingers. recommended, if you can hold it, it wont be too hot for the chip neither.

after some diodes, i remove my diodes from their cast metal housing without any mark.. cutting into both sides, then cracking it open with two pliers. sure, depends on the casing/heatsink.

I was focusing my axiz lens and I've concluded the spring damaged the open can diode, now it's broken!!!

dont feel too bad, I burnt up a 17 watt diode the other day!   still dont know how.

yesterday i extracted another open can from a 20x LG, that makes LG death toll=2 /so far/. used pliers, got sweat on my forehead but finally got it out intact. At present im doing burning experiments with its IR neighbour. The IR i got from the first 20xLG died after some 5 minutes of operation at 150mA. While 150mA might have been too much for it to handle, I dissected it and made a photo of its chip, which looks odd at best. In the photo the IR LD chip is as seen from above, 500x, you can notice how the upper bar is at an angle with respect to its fundament. Its other side/not visible/ is protruding slightly outwards, leaving the boundaries of the fundament. i wonder if this is a manufacturing fault or done on purpose....
Anyway, Im runnin the second IR at 120mA and it seems fine thus far.

Nice work and goodluck with it! What kind of machine did you use to take the last magnified picture? Not many people have that kind of equipment availible to them.

i used a microscope and a webcam to capture the image directly at the eyepiece . im considering returning the burner back to the store with a solid-state proof /the LD chip itself/ of a sloppy assembly process.
