I harvested this diode from a dvd drive, unsure of the model.
All I can really show are some pictures I took.
The sled has a QR code on it, the diode is unmarked.

Can anyone help identify it?

Well if it was a DVD reader (non R/RW), likely a low-power IR. Really good to practice with, but use caution as IR is deceptively dangerous (without precautions).

Yeah, looks to be one of those RUE (Rare Unidentifiable Enigma) laser diodes.

@OP , but seriously the best chance you will have is to look up the make & model DVD from which you extracted the LD within a LPF and or Google search to see if you get any hits for identification.

Wish you luck

LPF search didn't turn up anything, but I found out its a Sony CD-R/RW. Model number CRX217E-DS, rev A01. I think it's just an infrared diode.

*EDIT*
Apparently, it's red.
And I burnt my tongue, ow.

Its most likely a 250-300mw red diode. Could be wrong.

If it is, what current should I be running it at? 250? 300? 350? It's a 7 year old diode (according to the manufacturing date on the drive) so I'm not sure how much it can handle.
